And so it begins. Jupiter One’s self-titled album leaps from a rhythmic, pulsing (if slightly ethereal) intro into what sounds like the kind of album you want to listen to driving with the top down. It’s more than that, though. It’s the kind of album that engages you to listen and smile along. Sure, the lyrics don’t always meet the occasion, but they always rise to meet the road-song perfectly. And anything lacking in word-play is more than made up for in song-smithing. These guys can sure craft an album. And they have. The songs transition in a very relaxing way, and there’s hardly a jarring moment bouncing from kicky pop-thing to low-key kicky pop-thing.

Gary Numan vocal-styling with super-synth touches, (never too much or too little,) make for a fascinating 11 song album. Musically, Alan Parsons, rhythmically, Pink Floyd. Sometimes. It’s weird. Maybe like The Smith’s with a smile. But it’s great. I think that. It’s newwwww. Or old-new. If the Eighties are “old”. God help me.

They also get the coveted “Rhyming “Vagina” with Anything” award, if only because they tried.

“Fire Away” is the ninth song, I remark it here because it’s on the stereo as I’m writing this now. I like it. It’s important to mention that.

A more creative fellow might look this kind of thing up, but I believe in minimal research, so…

Jupiter One is an American indie rock band from Brooklyn, New York. Inspired by a wide range of influences, they create indie pop songs, with a grounding in new wave vintage synth sounds. One of their tracks, “Countdown”, has been featured in the video game Madden NFL 08, while “Platform Moon” was used in a commercial for Mazda outside of the US. Their debut album was released by Cordless Recordings.

K Ishibashi and Zac Colwell are the founding members of the group. Other members are K’s wife Mocha, a Japanese-born keyboardist/violinist, and drummer Dave Heilman.

If I played Madden, I’d have known that. Good for them.

I never liked the endings.

When the album fades away, it’s a bit like forgetting a great conversation where you hardly got a word in; all the bits you want to remember, and all the bits you’re apt to forget.

This is a lovely album, from top to bottom. Find it, add it to your collection, and tell some folks.
