Hailing from Greensboro, North Carolina, Farewell has become Epitaph’s Power-Pop darlings. Claiming “Isn’t this supposed to be fun?” on their latest album, the guys have successfully mixed early 2000 pop punk and 80s synth pop with modern power pop Epitaph is known for.
Farewell whips through the first half of the album quickly, pumping out catchy, teen-friendly jams. I was impressed with the quirkiness of “Sing Baby” which goes back and forth between power pop and some sort of vaudeville-esque swing. I also liked the song “Zelda” which has both late Blink 182 and Hellogoodbye influences. My favorite song on the whole album is “Hey Heather” which is more emotional and grittier than the others. Marshall Davis seems to be singing from his gut and is truly caught up in what he’s saying. He sounds morose but hopeful. The guitar riff during the chorus is also insanely catchy and makes your head nod along whether you want it to or not.
This is a solid CD. The first half is a little a weaker than the second, so be sure to not dismiss it when you have your first listen. It’s obvious Farewell knows what their doing, and will have no problem gaining a large fan base from this disc. On a final note, I got a kick out of Davis’ charming artwork on the whole CD.
