A while back, some friends of mine thought singer Courtney Taylor-Taylor, of the Dandy Warhols, is drug-induced, full of himself, and generally a jerk… but she loved him just the same. Despite what you may think, it’s hard to ignore his talent as a musician, as evident from his band’s live appearance at the Fine Line Cafe in Minneapolis on October 28^th.

I’ve seen the band a few times before, The Dandys seems to love Minnesoter, and I used to think that one of the band member was dating someone in Minneapolis, but I’m beginning to suspect it’s “f**cking Fridley”.

So, what a great show, I think this is the best yet, and it’s possibly because they did a ton of old songs, and none of that later stuff. Yes, we’re talking classics like “Not if You Were the Last Junky on Earth”, “Minnesoter” (of course!), “We used to be Friends”, “Solid”, “Horse Pills”, etc. I can go on, but basically most of the songs from Dandy Warhols Come Down, Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia, and Welcome to the Monkey House.

Easily the big highlight of the show was “Bohemian Like You”, which quickly came after “Godless”. This is interesting to note because “Godless” is so spacey and calm, compared to the thunderous “WOOOO WHOO-HOOO” chorus of “Bohemian”. The audience all knew the song and all help sing along.

A close highlight was when Zia decided she needed to pee and left the stage, right before they were going to do “I Love You”. So, while she was away, Courtney started to play and sing their cover of Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. He forgot some of the lyrics, but it sounded great, especially because they haven’t perform the song in over ten years.

They ended their setlist with medley of “Pete International Airport” and “Boys Better”. Since they admitted that they can’t top the pure energy of “Boys Better”, they just mellowed out to “Country Leaver” and, er, leaver the stage.

If you like The Dandy Warhols, circa late 90s to early 00s, you really owe it to yourself to catch them live on this tour, but if you can’t make it, the next best thing is their “Greatest Hits” album, The Capitol Years 1995-2007, out now on Capitol Records.
