News: Moby’s Destroyed in May
It’s been a long time since I heard from Moby. The last album I really enjoyed from him was 18, the album that came after Play (which I would say is the album that rocketed this musician to super-stardom). As just a casual fan, yeah, I haven’t really kept up with his whereabouts. Looks like he’s been really busy, with a few releases and even a “Best of”!
Moby is back with Destroyed, a combination of album and photography book, to be released May 17th, 2011, via Mute Records. If you can’t wait until then, you can preview some tracks with a free EP download at moby.com.
I did quickly listen to the three tracks, and here’s my thoughts: “Be the One” is pretty catchy, a bit repetitive with “I was the hell that you didn’t hold/I was the one that needed love” throughout the track, but with some proper beats will make a good floor stomper. On contrast is “Victoria Lucas”, which takes ages to build up. “Sevastopol” is a bit of drum and weird breaks… so a bit of a good mixture of what to expect from Destroyed.
Moby in his own words described the new album as “broken down melodic electronic music for empty cities at 2 a.m”. Read excerpt of explanation:

that’s what it sounds like to me, anyway. and the music was all originally written late at night while on tour, as i often have insomnia and spend a lot of times awake in hotel rooms at 2 a.m when everyone else in the world seems to be asleep. so rather than buy more drum machines on ebay (as nice as they are) i try to spend my insomnia time working on music. then i take the songs back to my studio and try to finish them with my weird collection of old, broken down drum machines and synthesizers and i try to convince my friends to sing on it (my friends emily zuzik, inyang bassey, and joy malcom sing on the record, as do i). then i put the songs on a record. then i call it ‘destroyed’. then i put it out in may of 2011. at least that is the plan.
I find that the most fascinating thing about this release is the photography book, it’s 128 pages with 55 photos taken from Moby from his travels. He’s really serious about his photos, and he’s not the only one! There will be some exhibits through the Summer – see details below.
