Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr (one of the subject in a recent W♥M Podcast) recently performed “Easy Money” from his latest Playland (Warner Music Group) on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (11/11) and CBS This Morning (11/15).

As we mentioned in the podcast, he has been performing the Smiths’ classic songs on his live show… and unfortunately, will not be returning back to Minneapolis. We caught Marr at a very rare meet & greet at Twin Town Guitars last year.

The Smiths

NME called this album “Greatest Albums of All Time”, and I can’t say I disagree. This is such a great album, because it is one of those albums that I know all the words to. There are no bad songs on this album

THE SONS & HEIRS

thesonsandheirs.com

If you didn’t know, New York-based the Sons & Heirs are a Smiths cover band, the name is taken from one of the Smiths’ most well-known song, “How Soon Is Now?” (“I am the son and the heir, of a shyness that is criminally vulgar“). From my understanding, they do not play Morrissey solo songs normally, but have been known to throw some post-‘nineteen eighty-hate’ songs, like “Tomorrow” and “Jack The Ripper” (yep, one of the all-time-greatest B-Side).

If you’ve got a stitch to wear the band is playing at Santos Party House this Friday, November 21st with Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices, Nada Surf).

Details:

WHO: Following several sold-out shows at the Bell House in Brooklyn, the Sons & Heirs bring their spot-on tribute to the Smiths and Morrissey to Santos Party House for a special show featuring indie rock legend Doug Gillard of Guided by Voices and Nada Surf

WHEN: Friday, November 21st at 7:00pm

WHERE: Santos Party House – 96 Lafayette St. New York NY

Don’t live on the East Coast? No problem, the Smiths cover band Sweet & Tender Hooligans will be playing the House of Blues in Hollywood on
January 03, 2015. See photos from their 2014 live show.

If you prefer to just hang the DJ, singer Jose ‘Mexican Morrissey’ Maldonado will be DJing your favorite Smiths/Morrissey songs at the The Moz Disco (Morrissey/The Smiths Night) at Mal’s Bar on November 22nd.

Morrissey

Also, Morrissey announced that he was dropped by his record label, Harvest Records… then within weeks, his latest album, World Peace is None of Your Business, was quickly removed from all digital outlets, …

MORRISSEY

true-to-you.net

When not cancelling US tour dates, Morrissey is actually is committed to playing some rare countries like Serbia, Croatia, Poland, etc. I’m almost certain many of those dates are sold out. There’s actually too many news about those dates, and generally news and magazine interviews are localized to that language, so I can’t say I follow it too closely.

With the new album World Peace Is None of Your Business, there is a song called “Istanbul” on the album… which I am very curious how fans will react when it’s played live when he arrive there on December 7th – see concert poster.

Tour dates:

11/19 Warsaw – Stodola

11/21 Krakow – Laznia Nowa

11/23 Berlin – Columbiahalle

11/24 Essen – Colosseum

11/26 Antwerp – Stadsschouwburg

11/27 Antwerp – Stadsschouwburg

11/29 London – O2 Arena

12/01 Dublin – 3Arena

12/05 Athens – Tae Kwon Do Arena

12/07 Istanbul – Volkswagen Arena

12/10 Belgrade – Belexpocentar

12/12 Zagreb – Zagreb Fair, Hall 9

12/15 Groningen – De Oosterpoort

12/16 Tilburg – 013

On the US front, Morrissey’s Autobiography is finally available in the States uncensored. My review copy is actually from the UK Penguin publisher, so it did not impact my book, however, I did know about the Jakegate censorship when the US version made its way into stores.

Autobiography by Morrissey
Penguin Classics

Billboard reports these are the three cut sentences (with photograph of Jake also removed):

  • “I am photographed for Creem magazine with my head resting on Jake’s exposed belly.”
  • “Indulgently Jake and I test how far each of us can go before ‘being dwelt in’ causes cries of intolerable struggle, but our closeness transcends such visitations.”
  • “‘Well,’ said the woman in the British Airways lounge, ‘You’re either very close brothers or lovers.’ ‘Can’t brothers be lovers?’ I impudently reply.”

  • I can speculate that the US Penguin publisher wanted to keep Morrissey’s sexual relationship ambiguous, but speaking as long time Morrissey fan and follower, we all knew about this. We all heard/talked about Morrissey and Jake (during the whole ‘Boxers’ era). It’s old news to us.

    Nobody Knows Anything
    Gare Du Nord

Also, briefly, wondering what one time Morrissey double-bass-player Jonny Bridgwood (he replaced Gary Day) has been up to? He’s been playing with Alex Highton, who is playing this Tuesday, November 25 at Servant Jazz Quarters in London. Highton upcoming album Nobody Knows Anything will be out December 8th on Gare Du Nord.

Regarding the title of the album, Highton said, “This is me trying to work out the point of it all really, to which the answer is I haven’t got a clue and nobody has. That Richard Dawkins advert that they had on the side on the London buses ‘There is probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.’ is probably were it’s at. I get pissed off with the certainties presented to me by religions and politicians. In fact I did record it with the loose idea that these songs were the thoughts running through someone’s head just before they die. It’s certainly structured in that way.”
