Kishi Bashi

The AthFest 2016 lineup was amazing, and I can’t think of a better headliner to close the festival than Kishi Bashi. This band is pure joy. There is no way you could watch

Athens’ Kishi Bashi headlined the historic First Avenue’s mainroom last Wednesday, October 12th.

Opening up the show was Twain, a band that we previously mentioned was led by Mt. Davidson. Joining him were two helpers, Peter Pezzimenti & Ken Woodward. The Minneapolis show was special to Twain, as it was their final show with Kishi Bashi.
Twain’s new release Sir Kitchen Boy EP came out last year.

From October 14 to October 24, Kishi Bashi will be joined by Busman’s Holiday – featuring two brothers Lewis and Addison Rogers – touring in support of their third LP Popular Cycles (Joyful Noise Recordings).

violin vs banjo

Ever since hearing Kishi Bashi (aka Kaoru Ishibashi) as headliner at Athfest 2016, we’ve been anticipating his 2016 tour.

If you didn’t know, Bashi is the founding member of Jupiter One, and former member of incredibly creative band of Montreal. The singer / songwriter can play practically any instrument, but his weapon of choice seemed to be either the violin or the piano.

Bashi, dressed in formal wear, seemed genuinely excited to play for us. He was always smiling and his giddiness was infectious.

Joining Bashi on stage was a full band, including a banjo player, who wound sometime do extended banjo with percussion solos (on ‘Atticus, in the Desert’). Bashi would also sometime have “battle-offs” with the violin vs the banjo.

Setlist

As you can see from his setlist, the majority of the songs were from his third and latest album Sonderlust (Joyful Noise).

Too many highlights to mention, for example ‘Bright Whites’ featured and extended flute solo or the solo Bashi song ‘I Am the Antichrist to You’… but obviously the giant red “Mr Steak” himself dancing on ‘The Ballad of Mr. Steak’ was the crowd pleaser.
