American singer/songwriter Sasami (stylized as SASAMI) just headlined the 7th Street Entry, in Minneapolis, on Saturday, April 2nd.
We previously saw her with Snail Mail in July 2019 and Soccer Mommy in Oct 2018. .. and I have to say, this currently version of Sasami, is very different from her previous appearances. She’s gone metal! I think this is fun, and I dig it.

I don’t know why I’m surprised, as we previously noted, “her performance has drastically changed from a calm typical band to a dangerous rock band.” Now, in 2022, she’s gone from dangerous rock band to a heavy metal ghost band.

Opening the show was New York’s Jigsaw Youth. I believe they got their name from a Bikini Kill song, which sets the tone of their music: they’re a bit DIY, a bit punk, and sludgy.

The trio, featuring lead singer and bassist Maria Alvarez, guitarist and bad storyteller Nastacha Beck, and drummer Alex Dmytrow, were excited to play and tour across the country… especially being in lock down for the past couple of years.

Songs on their set includes “Crash and Burn” and “Attacks”. When they have to tune their guitars for song changes, their drummer played an impromptu intermission drumming solo.

Sasami came on stage slightly later than advertised. She’s dressed up in this outfit, and her live band is Vermont’s metal band Barishi.

With the release of her new album Squeeze, Sasami teamed up with Rin Kim and Andrew Thomas Huang (a Chinese-American visual artist who worked with Björk and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke)… so the visuals and direction all tells the story of Squeeze.

Songs on her set includes many songs from Squeeze, including “The Greatest”, “Need It to Work”, and “Skin a Rat” (basically the first half of her set).

Sasami’s Squeeze is out now on Domino Records.
