Prateek Kuhad

Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Prateek Kuhad will be headlining the 7th Street Entry this June 16, in support of his third album The Way That Lovers Do, which is available via Elektra Records.

Acclaimed singer/songwriter Prateek Kuhad headlined the 7th Street Entry, on June 16, in support of his third album The Way That Lovers Do (Elektra Records).

Opening the show was singer/songwriter Laura Elliott. The lone New York singer played songs from her debut album People Pleaser, including “Blue” and “Better Off Alone”. The folksy twenty one year old singer has a lot of sad songs for being someone so young… Joni Mitchell would be proud.

Let me start by saying that I’ve never seen so many Hindi at a concert before. That’s thanks to Indian singer/songwriter Prateek Kuhad and his star power, thanks to former US president Barack Obama putting Kuhad’s song “Cold/Mess” on his “Favorite Music of 2019.”
I think it’s so cool to see people that don’t normally attend shows on the dancefloor… and I hope they continue to support live music.

Another thing to note is that Prateek Kuhad writes and sings songs in both Hindi and English. His music style is on the folk side with a hint of Indian pop/Bollywood. This is because he grew up isolated to Jaipur… but during his time at NYU, Kuhad discovered Elliott Smith. Soon, others, such as Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie, came along and impacted his love for the folk music genre.

In the middle of the set, he let his band (bassist Dhruv Bhola and drummer Nikhil Vasudevan) take a break, while he play a 10-min solo performance of “Pause” and “Kghk”.

Hailed by Rolling Stone India as “one of the country’s leading singer-songwriters,” Prateek Kuhad has been compared to the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Jose Gonzalez.

Prateek Kuhad’s third album The Way That Lovers Do, is available now on Elektra Records.
