Country still rules for July, and it's a bit of a break this week. For the first time since things returned, it’s a slow Saturday this weekend; but the following weekend, attention shifts west to Topeka and the three (actually, four) day Country Stampede at the Heartland festival, capped on Saturday night with a rock/rap performance from the controversial Kid Rock.
We’re still not out of the woods in terms of the pandemic, as late word came in that The Pretty Reckless are sidelined for the next week or so.
Here’s what’s happening in the Kansas City/Lawrence, KS metro July 9th – 17th

Halestorm with The Warning and Lilith Czar, Starlight. $29.50-$99.50
(note: The Pretty Reckless have had to pull out of three shows, including KC, due to Covid infections)
Grammy-winning hard rock band Halestorm, founded by siblings Lzzy and Arejay Hale, is back supporting their fifth studio album, Back from the Dead. The band surpassed a billion streams cumulatively and their fan base keeps on growing– we caught them live around this time of year back in 2014 and knew they were going on to bigger things.
From Monterrey, MX, The Warning is led by the Villareal sisters and San Fran’s indie/alt Lilith Czar is aka Juliet Simms, making for a female-empowered evening.
Alesana, recordBar, $25
North Carolina post-hardcore band is out on part one of their Trilogy Tour: The Emptiness, with Palisades and Vampires Everywhere as support.
Dale Watson and his Lonestars, Knuckleheads, $15
Like many others, a rescheduled show- Dale Watson has flown the flag for classic honky-tonk for over two decades, christening his brand of American roots “Ameripolitan” and the latest album is Call Me Insane, recorded in Austin.

Earth Wind and Fire, Starlight, UPDATE: Now Postponed
The legendary band has scored eight number one hits, sold over 100 million albums worldwide, and released 23 albums. They've won nine GRAMMY Awards including one for Lifetime Achievement (2012) and in 2000, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Expect plenty of hits.
Josh A w Justin Stone, Bottleneck-Lawrence, $25-$30
Florida rapper/producer (aka Lil Revive) has a growing cult following and is out supporting 2021’s Lonely Vibes. Also popular on social media, especially in the Midwest, is Columbus, OH opener Stone.
Wednesday July 13
Sunny Sweeney, Knuckleheads, $15
Houston country singer-songwriter has her fifth studio album, Married Alone, due out in Sept, so expect to hear some new material, as well as older songs like “From a Table Away” and “Drink Myself Single”.
AJJ, Granada Theater- Lawrence, $25
The Phoenix folk punk band is out supporting 2020’s Good Luck Everybody (prophetically titled as it was released right before the lockdown) and is known for their social, spiritual and existential lyrics and they’ve snuck in an old Roger Miller cover into recent setlists.
Mozzy, The Truman, $29.50-$60
Sacramento rapper signed earlier this year with Interscope/CMG and released single, “Real Ones” feat Roddy Ricch with latest collab “Tell the Truth” featuring Shordie Shordie.
Show Me the Body, recordBar, $20
Expect some chaos from this NYC hardcore punk band who released their Survive EP last year, themed in isolation and as a result of the lockdown. Openers Soul Glo and Wifigawd, Ebony Tusks, and Piss Kinks, make for a full evening.

Big Gigantic w DJ INZO, Young Franco and Covex, Arvest Bank at The Midland, $23.50-$38
Out on their Brighter Future Tour, the Boulder CO electronic hip-hop jazz instrumental duo have a new album Brighter Future 2 out, a sort of sequel to their 2016 release and latest single is “Open Your Mind” (feat. GriZ).
Arrive early for Chicago’s Mike Inzano, aka INZO now also Colorado-based and the DJ/producer achieved some acclaim for his 2019 debut EP, Multiverse, with new music on the horizon.
Young Franco is from Queensland Australia and DJ/producer Covex is also CO-based.
Granger Smith, Power & Light District, Free!
Dallas country singer-songwriter has ten studio albums to draw from, releasing the two-volume Country Things in 2020, winning a 2020 CMT Award for Best Quarantine Song with “Don’t Cough on Me”.
Decrepit Birth w/ Pathology, Unmerciful, Stabbing, Gourmand, BLVD Nights, $20
Five-act bill headlined by the Santa Cruz, CA technical death metal band on their Uncreation of Civilization Tour with original vocalist Bill Robinson due to return from an extended hiatus. The band has two studio albums through Unique Leader Records and two via Nuclear Blast. Pathology hails from San Diego, Stabbing is TX-based, and Unmerciful and Gourmand are from the local area.
Jarren Benton, Bottleneck- Lawrence, $18-$20
Decatur, GA rapper got signed to Roc Nation in 2018, and released Yuck Fou that year, with Kato.

Alt-country singer-songwriter best known as singer of Cross Canadian Ragweed
COUNTRY STAMPEDE – Kid Rock, Jake Owen, Walker Hayes, more July 14, 15, 16, Heartland Park Topeka, $70-$615
Country with a dash of rock takes over Forbes Field/Heartland Park is South Topeka for the entire weekend with heat in the forecast, both on stage and as far as weather.
Drew Parker and Colt Ford headline a pre-party at 6:30p the night before as well.

It will be getting Hot in Herre as the pride of St. Louis finally brings his live show to the KC area after some delays. Latest album was the crossover Heartland, from 2021.
Oak Ridge Boys, Ameristar. $40-$55
Papa Mow Mow! This legendary country band has been in existence since 1947! They put out a new record, Front Porch Singin’ late last year, and just keep on going.
Hyd, Bottleneck-Lawrence, $15
AKA Hayden Dunham who is an enigmatic multi-format artist, she was formally known as QT and has updated her blend of experimental electro-pop on last year’s self-titled EP.
Saturday July 16
Kansas w/.38 Special, Azura Amph, $23-$129
This bill would have been a stadium or arena show in decades past, but both bands are still chugging along and creating new music, as well as playing their many Midwest rock radio classics. The local fan base remains loyal since their NE Kansas beginnings in the early 70s.
Drive By Truckers w/Lydia Loveless, Knuckleheads, $23.50-$75
A solid Americana double bill here as the Athens, GA band released album Welcome 2 Club XIII just a month ago, and Ohio alt-country singer Loveless released latest album, Daughter, last September, the first on her own label imprint.
Sunday July 17
Mary Chapin Carpenter, Liberty Hall-Lawrence, $35-$251
Since her late 80’s beginnings, Mary Chapin Carpenter has been highly regarded for her influential blend of country, folk, rock and Americana and returned with 2020's The Dirt and The Stars. Plenty of older favorites should be played, like “I Take My Chances”, “Shut Up and Kiss Me”, “I Feel Lucky”, “The Hard Way” and “Down at the Twist and Shout”, along with newer songs.
Kurtis Conner, Uptown, $40-$80
Canadian stand-up comedian, YouTuber, podcaster, and proud mullet wearer.
Bad Bad Hats w Gully Boys, recordBar, $15
Minneapolis comes to KC as two bands we’ve been very familiar with, head down I-35. Indie rockers Bad Bad Hats have album Walkman out now, and Mpls girl group favorites Gully Boys have a new song, “Soon You See” just released.
