Australian singer/songwriter Julia Jacklin headlined the Fine Line Music Cafe, in Minneapolis, on Saturday night, to support her new album Pre Pleasure (Polyvinyl).
Opening the show was singer/songwriter Katy Kirby, fresh after a nearly sold-out six week tour with Waxahatchee.
Kirby’s latest album Cool Dry Place came out during the pandemic, in 2021, on Keeled Scales (via Secretly Distribution), so she was itching to play songs from the record, including the title track and its lead single, “Juniper”… the single actually has a special cocktail that Katy created. You can always enjoy the “Juniper’s Last Word” cocktail at home. Requires Gin, Chartreuse, lemon juice, dandelion tea, and Orgeat… served with a mint garnish and some “disappointing news”. As you can tell, Kirby has a very depressing sense of humor.
Kirby’s very brief 25-min set was very quiet, and thankfully, the audience was very attentive, and hanging on every note. She ended her set with a song that “she’s never played live before”, even though the song was written in March 2020. The very short song is about wishing someone special a happy little birthday.
If the Fine Line show wasn’t sold out, it sure felt like it.
Julia Jacklin walked on stage by herself to Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”… and the audience of mostly young women were singing along.
Jacklin has a very good local fanbase, thanks to being nominated for an ARIA award eight times, and strong support from local radio station The Current.
After one song solo, “Don’t Let the Kids Win” and her full band joined her on stage. With the full band, all the songs sounded much fuller, almost rock songs, especially “to Perth, before the border closes”.
Despite the fact that Jacklin was recovering from losing her voice (she had to postpone Philadelphia and Boston’s shows), she still sounded great.
