    PJ Harvey

In celebration of PJ Harvey’s return to the USA in seven years (stopping in at the Palace Theatre in St Paul on Oct 2), I thought you might want to hear my “Stories From Sea”. The last time I saw Polly Jean Harvey was at the Fine Line

As previously mentioned, this October 2nd, 2024, is PJ Harvey’s first return to the USA in seven years. It’s been a long time, so we’re hoping to see her again.

PJ Harvey at Fine Line (04 Dec 2000)

We previously saw her in December 2000, and wrote, “Again, apology, I have very poor memory of the show, other than she did my favorite song of hers at the time, “Good Fortune”, about early/mid-set, and I could have gone home happy. I guess it shouldn’t surprise anyone, as she was touring in support of her then-latest album Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea, which is one of my favorite PJ Harvey album that I purchased from Best Buy for $10… back when they actually sold and promoted CDs…. I can see that “Big Exit” was the show’s finale… saving her biggest hit song, “Sheela-Na-Gig” for the encore.”

Yard Act was a little more conversational. In fact, the lead singer, James Smith was down-right loquacious. They were excited to be in the Twin Cities, the first stop on their American Tour and they didn’t

British band Yard Act is back at the Fine Line, this October 2, 2024. They claim that they keep losing money whenever they play here, but the band loves playing in the USA, so come out and see them this October 2nd!

Yard Act at Fine Line (13 Sep 2023)

We previously saw the UK band in Sep 2023, and wrote, “Yard Act is a new band (2019) from Leeds England and they had quite the debut with their first album The Overload, which was short-listed (nominated) for the Mercury Prize last year. “Confident” is the word Pitchfork used to describe the album and it is a perfect word to describe the band with a heavy beat and recitative delivery of Smith’s somewhat rap, somewhat punk, sped-up poetry slam of verbal acrobatics with a tongue in cheek and biting tongue.”

Omni at First Avenue (30 April 2019)

Omni to open. We previously saw Omni in Apr 2019 and said, “The evening’s triple-bill lineup began with a buzzing trio from Atlanta, Omni (Philip Frobos, ex-Deerhunter guitarist Frankie Broyles, with live drummer Chris Yonker- perhaps named after the now-demolished Georgia arena?), who just signed to Sub Pop’s new Singles Club, playing both new songs, ‘Delicacy’ and ‘I Don’t Dance’, and more during their brief opening set. The trio plays an antsy and addictive blend of post-punk rock, sharpened by staccato riffs and cerebral arrangements and is working on their third full-length, visibly happy about their recent signing and the chance to be on this bill. From the enthusiastic reception gauged, expect the band back, when the new record completes.”

The Collection is touring in support of Little Deaths.

Frontman David Wimbish reflects, “Our last record was triumphant. Little Deaths is about vulnerability. I’d been isolated and drinking a lot, and I realized I’d lost any sense of presence in the moment. When I got sober, I realized the best — and worst — thing about it was that I felt all my feelings. I felt really vulnerable.”

COIN is touring in support of I’m Not Afraid of Music Anymore (available September 13 via 10k Projects). The tour will stop in at the Fillmore, in Minneapolis, on October 2, 2024.

COIN at First Avenue (15 June 2019)

We saw COIN in June 2019 and said, “The foursome (Chase Lawrence– vocals/synths; Ryan Winnen– drums; Joe Memmel– guitar; Matt Martin– touring bass) have always brought an infectious energy to their live performance and this night was no exception. “I feel like every time we come to Minneapolis, something strange happens, but not tonight” Lawrence said, without further detail, “but not tonight, we have to come back!”. After the new ‘I Want it All’ (not to be confused with the Queen song), the biggest crowd response was saved for their breakthrough radio single, ‘Talk Too Much’, with the crowd singing the chorus back to the band, and COIN ended their forty minute set with 2015’s ‘Fingers Crossed’. Expect them to return and headline once the new album is released.”

Aidan Bissett at 7th Street (04 Mar 2022)

    Aidan Bissett to open.
We caught the singer with Claire Rosinkranz in Mar 2022 and wrote, “Aidan Bissett opened the show. He’s joined on stage by drummer Chris and guitarist Kyle. Just prior to playing his single, “Communication”, the singer/songwriter admitted that he only started writing music recently, and especially during the COVID quarantine. Afer his big hit song, “Dumped”, Bissett tested out a new song that he dubbed “Twenty-Something”.”
