Memphis rock band Lucero is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Nobody’s Darlings. The last news we heard from the band was that their singer, Ben Nichols, released his sophomore solo album In the Heart of the Mountain via Lucero’s label Liberty & Lament.

We last saw Lucero in Oct 2016 and wrote, “Lucero kicked off their set with ‘Went Looking For Warren Zevon’s Los Angeles’ to an incredibly pleased dedicated, die-hard Lucero fans. Although the song is taken from their latest album All a Man Should Do (ATO Records / MapleMusic), it felt like the rest of their set were basically a greatest hit, anniversary show.”

Jessica Lea Mayfield to open. We saw Mayfield at SXSW in March 2014 and noted, “Jessica Lea Mayfield, singer-songwriter. She is why we sat through Rhett Miller. I loved the last LP (Tell Me), but she has gone into a heavy metal phase. Lots of chorus and distortion on her guitar. Not sure what she was trying for, but I still like her.”

Sing Out Loud Local Artist

Leading up to the big annual Sing Out Loud’s Live Wildly Showcase event (this year taking place on Sep 20-21), various venues around St Augustine are hosting a diverse mix of over 200 national, regional, and local artists. The festival spans multiple weekends each September, including both free and ticketed events, across dozens of venues.

The Sing Out Loud Local Artist Showcase spotlight on hundreds of local musicians. From my understanding, all these events are free.

Unfortunately, all these venues are in the St Augustine area, which is about an hour away from Jacksonville. Still, if you don’t mind the drive or lives in St Augustine, this is a great way of checking out some local talents, as well as grabbing a drink.

Personally speaking, I probably won’t go, as it seems like a long drive for me to check out some bands. It might be a different story if some of these Sing Out Loud artists spill over to Jacksonville.

Ahead of their appearance at Portola Music Festival 2025, Los Angeles’ Kumo 99 (Ami Komai and Nate Donmoyer) will be headlining Jack Rabbits, in Jacksonville, on September 7, 2025.

Soon may the Wellerman come to bring us sugar and tea and rum… you all remember that viral hit from 2021? It would seem that the very old song inspired this bass singing folk group, The Wellermen, named after the song.

Expect the band to perform “Wellerman” as the last song… as heard with The Longest Johns (the band that recorded that song before Nathan Evans discovered them).
