A bit of a last gasp of summer (read: wow, it’s really unseasonably hot) made it nice to be inside for some electronica with Mystery Skulls serving things up at St. Paul’s Turf Club.
Getting things going was Angel Beloved one of the co-founders of MPLSHOUSE, who specialize in DJ / house music as well as well as producing. This was a lively DJ set as Angel Beloved worked to create a vibe for the crowd to get pumped for the headliner. A DJ set is a bit of a high wire act, as it requires the audience to decide to buy into a different idea of music creation / curation. But given that Mystery Skulls is built on an electronic / laptop musical base, this was probably the ideal audience for it. And it turned out to be a crowd happy to groove along, notice and react to the drop and transitions and generally be in a good spot to receive this. A mice bit of theatrical energy from the stage also helped keep the audience moving. Finishing up on the expected high energy beat, Angel Beloved had done his opener’s duties quite effectively.

Mystery Skulls is the current band name for the electronic dance music mastermind Luis Dubuc. The Venezuelan born, Los Angeles based artist has been at it from some time, first fronting the EDM band The Secret Handshake with four albums before launching music under the current name of Mystery Skulls. With ten albums released since 2011, including Ultra Rare Vol. 3 from 2024, Dubuc is a very busy artist. Arriving on stage after slipping through the crowd, it was a solo set up behind a large electronic laden table and in front of a bank of lights. Mystery Skulls hit hard, grabbing the mike and singing as he also ran the board. This was EDM at its best, with all of the programmed music making a full sound and then his vocals driving each song.
Those transitions were excellent as it went into The Future and a thumping bass beat with the crowd singing. The audience was into it, and I really liked watching them rock out as much as seeing Dubuc’s performance. Banter was brief but effective (“this is the best Monday ever!”). Paralyzed had strobe effect on the lights and full thrum on the music, with Dubuc getting to full out sing. Magic was your clap heavy number and got the first invited crowd sung chorus. A “who wants to hear a new song?” got all the cheers you would expect and after a “hands up”, the audience was flying high on Read My Mind. We got a slower number with Movies, which was a little more R&B infused, before going fully back into the dance music. Heading towards the close, Mystery Skulls was crushing it with some hard beat songs, and by the time Untouchable Champions hit, the house club vibe was at maximum effect. When the song Ghost started playing, the audience was literally screaming and it was as good of a close as you could get. Stepping off briefly, the encore Invincible was exactly what you would hope: super high energy, thumping bass and Dubuc singing with wild abandon. Thanking the Turf Club and crowd, Mystery Skulls left the stage to tremendous applause and a promise to be back.
