Horror: VHS
The latest found footage horror series V/H/S is back with V/H/S Halloween. This is the eighth installment, and as someone who has seen all the VHS series, I can’t honestly tell you which ones are good. They’re pretty much all the same: random little stories with VHS special effects. Sometime it’s unwatchable, sometime it’s scary, sometime it’s goofy… you know what you’re getting when you watch a VHS film.
Halloween is at the end of month, so here are some horror films you might want to check out.

This is the eighth installment, and as someone who has seen all the VHS series, I can’t honestly tell you which ones are good. As the Halloween title suggests, this latest edition has a Halloween theme. In the first story, two best friends too old for Trick or Treat, are celebrating their last night celebrating the holiday. They’re determined to ‘trick’ to the best of their abilities and have a blast. After all their shenanigans, they stumbled upon one last house, who beacons them inside for their treat…
Yeah, so the stupid girls go inside the house and found themselves trapped. The door disappeared, and they spend the rest of the story screaming and seeing all sorts of horror, while trying to escape.
The second story is in Spanish, so it’s hard to follow what is going on if you’re not paying attention. It follows the story of a survivor of a Mexican Halloween, Day of the Dead or Day of the Witches celebration. The police brought him back to the scene of a crime and they try and re-construct what happened.
The third story is another adult going on trick-or-treating. Two of the costumes are a couple of “found footage costumes”. They find a bowl with strange candies and get sucked into a strange candy factory.
The last story is about a father and son and their annual Halloween haunted house event. They find a haunted record and played the record to some horrific results.
Overall, I really like the Halloween theme. I previously mentioned all the VHS films are indistinguishable from one another… but this one, with the Halloween theme, it stands out.
NIGHT OF THE REAPER (2025)

I’m assuming Night of the Reaper takes place in the 80s, because two small town cops are investigating a murdered girl using clues from a series of VHS tapes that were mailed or discovered by the cops. While all this is happening, the babysitter for the cop’s son may be the latest victim for the Reaper… but it’s not what you think.
This film is pretty good… although it can be a little long and boring. There’s a lot of false leads and slowburning moments. I mean do we really need like two minutes of the babysitter discovering a dead dog and then calling to report about the dead dog? Maybe if you needed to emphasize that the killer may have slipped through the doors when she walked outside… but I felt that could have been told a little more efficiently. Instead, there’s a lot of long drawn-out moments.
By the time you find out who the Reaper is and the role of the babysitter, that’s when the movie gets going. The doofus cop plays a part in resolving the story, and it has a pretty good ending.
The most stupidest moment in the movie involves a walkie-talkie. C’mon, I cannot believe that.
