It’s understandable if Snail Mail and Soccer Mommy are sort of linked in your mind already. They both hit indie playlists in 2018 with searing confessional singles – “Pristine” and “Your Dog”, respectively. They both draw from millennial pop, 90’s crunchiness, and the more emotional parts of 80’s alternative. As sweetly melodic songs about miserable romances had their moment, they both seemed to be everywhere.
So a double-bill with the two of them is already a pretty perfect pairing. But it’s also an amazing opportunity to see two artists, still-rising, with larger crowds and in bigger venues than they might be able to book on their own. (We saw Snail Mail at First Avenue in 2019, and they last played Minnesota opening for Dinosaur Jr. at the Fillmore in 2025. Similarly, we covered Soccer Mommy opening for Luna in 2017, opening for Liz Phair at the Turf Club in 2018, headlining at the Entry later that year, at the Granada in 2022, and headlining the Mainroom in 2025.)
There’s new music to share, as well. Soccer Mommy, in September, released a new single, “Rings of Saturn”, which made an appearance during the second half of their opening set. (“Saturn” is not a star-gazing metaphor: Soccer Mommy’s Sophie Allison is a backyard astronomy enthusiast.) One song later, the band would mostly leave for “Still Clean”, played by Allison as a duet, with only cello accompaniment. “Your Dog” followed, with the full band returning to the stage.
Snail Mail’s new album, Ricochet, came out in March. It’s a progression for Lindsey Jordan as a songwriter, but stays mostly in her comfort zone, refining the formula. They play almost all of Ricochet on this tour, with only a few select cuts from Lush (“Heat Wave”, “Speaking Terms”) and Valentine (“Valentine”) mixed into the end of the set.
So, was the crowd at the Palace hoping to see both stars share the stage? Could that somehow come together? And if so, how? I’ll give you a minute to avert your eyes if you’re sensitive to spoilers, but… “yes” and “yes” and “with a cover of Ride’s ‘Vapour Trail'”. That unassuming 90’s shoegaze classic is a great showcase for them: a simple-but-twisting chord progression, jangly guitar interplay, and a sweet-yet-plaintive melody that felt timeless on its release but also set a direction for decades to come. Soccer Mommy would leave the stage, and Snail Mail would wrap her set with the title track from Ricochet. Just as Soccer Mommy closed with their 2018 breakthrough, Snail Mail would do the same, returning to “Pristine” as an encore.
Opener Brennan Wedl (Nashville-based, but “from right here” in the Twin Cities) set the tone early (literally: we had doors at 6pm for Wedl at 6:30). She and her band share that enthusiasm for pop melodies, alt-rock intensity, and “90’s revivalism”, though a few selections leaned into country and Americana more than we’d hear the rest of the night. She’s rolling off the tour: Scarlet Rae has the second half.
