Bearsuit Records
With the internet and technology making producing music easier, we’re seeing more computer home-made music coming out. Bearsuit Records demonstrate this with their latest sampler CD: A Weevil in a Biscuit (2007).
All the artists are from around the world and their genre covers mostly from nontraditional, experimental, electronic, and ambient music.
I have included a brief biography and contact about some of the bands that stood out for me, however you should stop by Bearsuit Records and check out all their artists.
OOMIAQ
It seems as if this is a one-man project, and he’s from France. The song is taken from his album taKe keEp gO, which I think was released last year. The song sounds like it was sung by that woman from Cranes, but the excerpt I read was that Oomiaq recorded children singing. He claims that all the words and melodies were invented by the children. This is fascinating, it’s probably the best song on the compilation. More information on oomiak.oomiaq.free.fr and myspace.
ALONE TOGETHER
I wanted to mention this song because it sounds as if Alvin and the Chipmunks became a hip electro trio. The fact is that it’s the work of Yuuki Ota and his music production company, from Japan. They have released two albums, Here’s The Club Assassin (2005) and 貴族最後の日 (2007), with a new one called Broken Piano coming out in 2008… which is apparently freeware:

LINDA BJALLA
This is a dreamy/Cocteau Twins-esque track. I thought the musician is called Linda Bjalla, but according to the information I’ve been given, it said it is the “solo work by Izumi Suzuki”. The song was made for one of her friend, who sounds depressed and suicidal. Anyway, she has a hand-made EP out and is for sale for 600 JPY. Or, what’s interesting, she’s willing to also trade CDs. More information on www.lindabjalla.com and myspace.
DM STITH
Stands for David Michael Stith, from Brooklyn, New York. His demos and 2004 album, Ichabod & Apple can be downloaded for free on his website. I haven’t had a chance to listen to his other songs, but I did like his voice a lot on this song. It’s like a drugged out Damon Albarn. More information on www.dmstith.com and myspace.
If you liked reading and hearing some of the artists I’ve mentioned – be sure to check out the rest of the bands associated with this sampler. I think many these songs would actually fit very well as a movie or video game soundtrack, like background ambient music underneath a well-written dialogue.
It looks like Bearsuit Records have released Scotland’s Harold Nono To The River Lounge album as well as a few compilation CDs. It is available to buy at payloadz.
