The Birthday Suits are Peelander-Z’s official opening band, having opened up for Peelander-Z every time the band is here (except perhaps last year). The duo played hard and fast, with few (or no) breaks between their songs… which may have caused some confusion on when to clap and cheer. It would later be revealed that it was drummer Matthew’s birthday (and his wife was in the audience), and also guitarist/singer Hideo would later resurfaced on Peelander-Z’s set to help play their show out.
As for Peelander-Z, this is a new version of the band, yet their sound remain intact. Beloved guitarist Peelander-Red is now replaced by Purple, and Peelander-Green is replaced by, er, Peelander-Green (or would it be racist to call him Peelander-White?) Live guitarist Peelander-Black is nowhere to be seen, but that may be just as well because we’ve always thought he was too “serious” and “cool”.
Songs from their set, surprisingly feature very few songs from Metalander-Z (I can only recall the “Alphabet” song), but that’s okay, I think it’s good that Peelander-Z would slowly introduce newer songs. Fans are already itching to hear classic Peelander-Z songs like “So Many Mike”, “Mad Tiger”, “Taco Taco Tacos”, “S.T.E.A.K.”, etc.
The show include many of fun things you would expect from a Peelander-Z show, including pots/pans, audience participation, limbo, human bowling, and teaching how to dance. New to the show is the two-man with extended mic stand. The audience was rough, often moshing to the faster songs. This is normal as younger (and more energetic) fans are discovering Peelander-Z’s shows.
As for the new Peelander-Purple guitarist, he seems like a goofball and a fool, which is actually a perfect fit for Peelander-Z.
Anyway, by the time “Ninja High School” started, Birthday Suit’s Hideo (dressed in a fluffy yellow outfit) and Rabbit Holes’ guitarist Tester & drummer Adam Bubolz joined on stage to play until the finale, “Girl Just Want To Have Fun”.
I’ve said this before, but Peelander-Z is a fun live band. If you’ve never seen the band live, you really need to do yourself a favor and give them a chance. Peelander-Z’s latest album is the hair-band/metal inspired rock album Metalander-Z.
