So, it’s come to this. We have so many shows for the fourth week of Roctober that I have to split up the week until Wednesday! Unfortunately too many (good) bands are playing at the same time! So the theme for this article is “Double Shows” (either John or Vu will be at one of these shows).

Also playing this Monday at the Varsity Theater is The 1975:

THE 1975
the1975.com

Everybody loves ‘Chocolate’…the candy, as well as the current single from Manchester UK-based The 1975, whose debut album (on Dirty Hit/Polydor) debuted at #1 on the UK albums charts (even besting NIN new LP) and is starting to make substantial noise on these shores as well.

The band has actually been around in some form since 2002, and after 4 eps and now a full-length, is ready to fully conquer America. A sometimes melancholy blend of alt and guitar pop, singer Matt Healy actually cites director John Hughes and his bastion of 80’s coming-of-age-teen films as a major influence (don’t expect a Simple Minds cover in concert though).

Breakthrough band of the year? You decide– if you can score a ticket, that is, as screaming females and Brit rock fans have already reserved theirs.

October 19 Lincoln Hall Chicago, IL
October 20 The Rave Bar Milwaukee, WI

LUCY ROSE
lucyrosemusic.com

Lucy Rose will be over at the Amsterdam Bar and Hall in Saint Paul for her final 2013 Fall tour date.

I’ll confess that I’ve never been to that venue before (since I’m primarily based in Minneapolis and rarely cross that Mississippi River to see shows). The right side and the wrong side of the river, right?

Rose will be playing songs from her debut album, Like I Used To, via Tirty Tigers with Sony RED distribution, including her recent singles, “Bikes” and “Middle of the Bed” (which you can download for free via Rolling Stone Magazine)

Rose’s remaining US tour dates:

10/18/13 Canmore, AB Communitea Cafe

10/19/13 Edmonton, AB The Starlite Room

10/21/13 Winnipeg, MB Park Theatre Cafe

10/22/13 Saint Paul, MN Amsterdam Bar and Hall

If I wasn’t in St Paul that night, the other show I would have actually attended would be Foy Vance:

FOY VANCE
foyvance.com

Ireland’s Foy Vance is currently in America, touring in support of Joy Of Nothing. The album featured special guests such as Ed Sheeran and Bonnie Raitt.

The band’s first proper headlining tour is getting a lot of buzz, in particular the more populated/hip cities (Nashville, Los Angeles, and Toronto) have sold out.

Opening up for selected shows will be Little Green Cars, a band that we like and previously appeared in Minneapolis earlier in April.

KODALINE
kodaline.com

When we last saw the lads of Dublin quartet Kodaline, they were opening on a spring tour for The Airborne Toxic Event, to great reception. Now that their debut full-length, In a Perfect World (RCA/Red) has just been released, they’re returning on a headlining tour to re-introduce us to their anthemic blend of Irish alt-rock.

Fresh from a mini-residency in NYC (including a live appearance on VH-1), the tour also brings opener Diane Birch whose own new album, Speak a Little Louder (S-Curve) brings soul-pop influence with freshness from this keyboard playing singer-songwriter. Birch worked with Dap Kings drummer Homer Steinweiss and Aqualung’s Matt Hales to concoct the new tracks on this sophomore album, that shows her musical growth.

As well, Kodaline has been playing a Sam Cooke cover in concert, so chances of very soulful evening with both acts, is a near certainty, so make sure to book a ticket and arrive early.

Tour dates:

10/19/13 New York, NY CMJ @ Pianos
10/20/13 Toronto, ON The Mod Club
10/22/13 Chicago, IL Subteranean
