Japanese noise artists Melt-Banana’s show at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis was incredibly well-attended for a Wednesday night. I suppose this is no surprise, having built up a hardcore following since their existence, almost twenty years ago.
Currently the live band only consists of singer/programmer Yasuko Onuki and guitarist Ichirou Agata. The rest of their music comes from a laptop full of drum samples and samples, a colorful programmed keypad that Yasuko uses throughout the show, and about five or six very large speakers and amps that they bring on tour with them. For just two people, they produced some of the loudest sound I’ve heard at live shows.
As you can see from their setlist, you have to read it top right to left (per Japanese reading order). I can’t read Japanese, but I am guessing that they reference pre-programmed beats, effects, or samples (via the numbers).
I know there are over twenty tracks, but you have to also understand that their songs are incredibly short (with one one song only 30 seconds long!), true to any punk/experimental music.
With this type of music, in particular any foreign language metal, the audience isn’t there to analyze or understand the lyrics, so often they give feedback by screaming “woo” or moshing to the harder songs… which inspired the duo to maintain a high level of energy during their performance.
