Boris at the Triple Rock Social Club, Minneapolis (12 August 2014)
Japanese noise rock band Boris is currently touring in the USA in support of their 19th studio album Noise. The band was incredibly pleased at the sold out show at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis, last night, August 12th.

Typical of any Triple Rock show, we had three bands, with the first being SubRosa. They drone out epic songs, such as the 15-minute song “The Usher” from their More Constant Than The Gods album …. so it’s not unusual that they only play one or two songs on their set.
The second was The Atlas Moth, who played 86% songs from their latest album The Old Believer, which came out last month on Profound Lore.
It’s hard for someone like me trying to describe Boris to you. While most people will put them into the drone category, when you see them live, they go beyond that. From experimental to a little sludge to metal to shoegaze … and unexpectedly even a little pop rock! This is, by definition, what the band is trying to achieve, as noted by drummer Atsuo who once said, “Having some kind of preconceived message or theme is very boring to me, it becomes a crutch.”
As soon as the band arrived on stage, the audience cheered super loud when Takeshi took the stage in his famous double-neck guitar/bass.
Before the introduction of “Vomitself”, both Wata and Atsuo thanked us for “this special night”. Atsuo added, in his broken English, “Thank you so much Minneapolis. We had such a good time with you. Few more songs for you tonight.”
“Vomitself”, with its extended ending/jam session featured Atsuo banging the gong behind him (the only time the gong was used!) and holding up a noise petal/box while standing above their adoring fans. All the hands were up, and, of course, beckoned Atsuo to stage dive into the sea of people…. making for a very satisfying ending to their show.
No encores were given, despite the chants of “Boris! Boris! Boris!”, but none was expected, because it would be impossible to top their set finale.
