Lucius

Brooklyn’s Lucius is coming back to Minneapolis… playing their biggest venue so far: the main room at First Avenue! …

The music of Brooklyn quintet Lucius generally isn’t one to make a young kid scream and cry, but…

…that happened to be the case at the band’s recent in-store performance at The Electric Fetus, ahead of their all-but-sold-out third local appearance in less than a year, at their biggest local venue to date, the mainroom at First Avenue.

The band (look/sound-alikes Jess Wolfe, Holly Laessig, along with Dan Molad, Peter Lalish, and Andrew Burri) returned to town in support of their still climbing debut, Wildewoman (Mom+Pop Music) and graced the all ages, early evening crowd with a five song, 28 minute in-store performance.

As the amps hummed to live and the band’s instruments and voices got louder, the sudden volume change scared a couple of youngsters in the audience, coincidentally right when Wolfe and Laessig were at the chorus of the opening number- singing ‘Go Home’ as they looked at the kids, which drew laughter from band and crowd alike.

The group clearly remembered their last time in town which was during a massive snowstorm that still brought in a capacity turnout, and they thanked anyone in the record store crowd, that happened to be one of those brave fans.

‘Genevieve’ was next, with inspired stripped-down dueling percussion in the form of cowbell vs. wooden sticks by the ladies.  A pink vinyl version of the debut album was for sale (which also in part, celebrates October Breast Cancer Awareness month) and a deluxe version of Wildewoman, expanded to 19 tracks with addl. covers and remixes, is out this coming Tuesday.

‘How Loud Your Heart Gets’ was a rolling mid-tempo number ideal for this acoustic setting while the slower, ‘Monsters’ brought the band’s hypnotic, lilting harmonies to the forefront.  “This one, you can stand up and dance to, feel free to get funky”, the band prefaced current radio hit, ‘Turn It Around’, which even had the previously scared young kids, dancing in the record store aisles.

The band plays the ACL Fest in Texas this weekend, before taking their show over to Europe for a fall tour, returning just in time for a few pre-holiday East Coast dates, to wrap up the year.
