Oakland’s Day Wave is currently on their Hard to Read tour, stopping by Minneapolis’ 7th Street Entry on Friday, May 6th.

Sleeping Jesus

Sleeping Jesus

Winona’s Sleeping Jesus started the show. Thankfully, it wasn’t religious music, as the “Alaskan Farmer” band’s name might imply. The band is led by singer/songwriter Nick Elstad, with Ross on bass, Tim (?) on drums, and Victor on guitars.

They played everything off their Perennial EP and ending with a couple of new songs (‘Ghetto Blasters’ and ‘Goddess’) on their 25-min set (they started a little late).

Jack and The Coax

Jack and The Coax

Next up was local Jack and The Coax, played almost their entire EP Whiskey Kids (‘Addiction’, ‘Couple of Devils’, ‘La De Da’), which they recorded at McNally Smith College of Music in Spring 2015. Making up the rest of their set were some “new [Jeff] Kruse tunes” like ‘Here To Stay’ and ‘Honey’.

The band seemed to have some good local support from fans, friends, and family, and they have a “jammy” sound to them, so many of their songs sounded like they’ve been extended, especially with saxophone added to their live set. Even though they started earlier than advertised, I got a feeling that their 40+ minute set was not enough for this band.

Jackson Phillips

Jackson Phillips

Closing out the show was Day Wave, led by band leader Jackson Phillips. The band is fairly new, only forming in 2015 with their debut EP Head Case… but already there’s some great buzz, thanks to online streaming radio Apple Music and word of mouth. In fact, Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus randomly heard one of their songs and instantly became a massive fan.

After creating more buzz from SXSW 2016, showcasing their Hard to Read album tour, the band finally made it to Minneapolis on Friday night.

Seeing them play at the tiny 7th Street Entry venue, I felt their music had a nice breeze to them, and is really the perfect soundtrack to this Summer. Don’t believe me? Head over to Soundcloud and hear some samples for yourself.

As you can see from their setlist, they basically played almost everything they’ve published on their two EPs (Hard to Read and Head Case) and throwing in some oddies and one cover song (New Order’s ‘Ceremony’). They ended their 45-min set with ‘We Try But We Don’t Fit In’, a dreamy shoegazing fuzzy number.
