Lala Lala at 7th St Entry
|
Chicago’s Lala Lala headlined the 7th Street Entry, in Minneapolis, on Thursday night… but it almost didn’t happen. On the road to Minnesota, the 60mph wind blew Lala Lala’s van door open and broke it. They couldn’t get it to lock and close, so they used bungee cords… but the extremely cold temperature and snow did not help matter. Welcome to Minneapolis’ spring time, I suppose!
Anyway, hearing the story from band leader Lillie West, it sounded like they nearly had to cancel this show. Fortunately, the show did take place.
Opening up the show was Elton Aura with his DJ. His music was hip-hop and R&B. It’s a running joke, but almost every song ended with air horns (which was also a running gimmick of another singer/DJ in the past). If you’re confused or not sure what an air horn sounds like, head over to YouTube to hear a sample.
Aura dedicated “Big Brother” to his older brother, for inspiring him to sing and write songs. Near the end of his set, starting with “Poison Ivy”, he started testing out “new sh**”, new songs that haven’t been recorded yet.
Lala Lala came on stage to very loud clapping from everyone at the 7th Street Entry… Although singer Lillie West came to Los Angeles when she was a teenager, I still detect a British accent on her whenever she spoke.
Since catching Lala Lala in Oct 2017 at the defunct Triple Rock Social Club, we described the band as “a DIY girl rock sound to them and their music seemed to fit in really well with the Girlpool audience.” We saw them again in Mar 2019 and noted, “downtempo sound amid often dark lyrics is still evolving”.
They ended their set with “Fantasy Movie” with special guest Elton Aura, to help them close out the show.
Lala Lala’s latest I Want The Door to Open is out now on Hardly Art.
