My Morning Jacket

This is the second night for My Morning Jacket at the Northrop Auditorium in Minneapolis. While Friday’s MMJ show featured local Hippo Campus, Saturday’s support will come from Lizzo.
….
Wilderado

Wilderado w Flipturn, April 3, Bottleneck-Lawrence,
The Tulsa indie-folk band is out in support of their self-titled debut album from last year, featuring recent single, “The Worst of It”. Maybe you just caught them on Jimmy Kimmel.

By the second song one of the fans of My Morning Jacket (MMJ) could barely contain himself. From the photo pit I heard him exclaim: “Sh*t! Holy Sh*t!” as if he had just witnessed the second coming.

Wilderado opened the evening with a brief set from their self-titled debut released in 2021. They have been on the road with MMJ for three shows already and even headlined in a barn in Iowa while MMJ was playing Bonnaroo this past weekend.

From Tulsa, Oklahoma, the band is comprised of Max Rainer and Tyler Wimpee on vocals and guitar, Justin Kila on drums and David Arthur Timson on bass. Rainer and Wimpee formed the group in 2015 when they met in college and decided to start writing songs by their fifth year when they noticed all their friends had moved on.

Their music resides in that aura of transition. Rainer told the Atwood Magazine that it took them five years as a group to all get on the same page. And right now they seemed to have found the right gear with Billboard Magazine describing their sound like a fine whiskey: “Wilderado just goes down easy.”

There was quite the delay before My Morning Jacket took the stage. But it wasn’t a bad thing. Fans were still arriving for the early show. The roadies had quite a bit to set up. Plus they played some pretty good pre-show music, music you normally wouldn’t hear at a rock show with songs like “Caravan” and “Mood Indigo” from the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

From Louisville, Kentucky MMJ the band consists of Jim James on lead vocals and guitar, Tom Blakenship on bass, Patrick Hallahan on drums, Carl Broemel on guitar and Bo Koster on Keyboards.

Unlike most bands they released their self-titled album as their eleventh album in 2021, even celebrating their 1000th show earlier in June in the Netherlands of all places for it was there that a cult following began to form when they first started out.

MMJ is definitely a band to see live. Each song turns into an epic jam. The light show is phenomenal and they hardly waste any time between songs with Hallahan and Blakenship seamlessly leading the group from song to song. Plus, two-plus hours of Southern Rock with tinges of alt “In Its Infancy (The Waterfall)”, funk-leading-to-reggae “Off the Record” and synth dance “Wordless Chorus”

The high water mark was “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt 2” from their Grammy nominated album Evil Urges. The song started off sounding like an 80’s arcade game, with the light flickering and pulsating, before moving into what MMJ does best: building into a moment that is sweet, lush, theatrical, extended and guaranteed to bring out more profanity from the fans in the crowd.
