Alan Doyle
with Adam Baldwin
at Parkway Theater

theparkwaytheater.com

Canadian legend Alan Doyle, best-known as lead singer for Newfoundland’s beloved Great Big Sea is returning to the Minneapolis area… this time playing the Parkway Theater on March 6, 2024.

We saw Alan Doyle in April 2022 and wrote, “Alan Doyle started his set with a solo, a cappella version of “Dream of Home”, before his band, The Beautiful Band, joined Doyle on stage. The Beautiful Band featured Cory Tetford (former member of Crush) on guitars, Kendel Carson (from The Paperboys) on fiddle, Kris MacFarlane (from Great Big Sea) on drums, Shehab Illyas (from Mir) on bass, and Todd Lumley (from Waltons) on piano / accordion. As you can see, each band members are accomplished musicians, but combined together, they are just amazing.”

Nova Scotia’s Adam Baldwin (not to be confused with actor Adam Baldwin who appeared at Wizard World 2014) to open.

The Canadian singer-songwriter’s sophomore full-length, Concertos & Serenades came out in September 2022.

Matisyahu
with Cydeways
at First Avenue

first-avenue.com

Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and alternative reggae rock musician Matisyahu is on tour in 2024 in support of his new EP Hold the Fire, just released February 2nd via his own label, Fallen Sparks Records.

We saw Matisyahu in 24 Oct 2015 and wrote, “We’ve seen Matisyahu before, but Saturday’s show was possibly the best show we’ve ever seen – and it’s thanks to clearly hearing every note from his very excellent live band, away from the distractions of a regular “rock” show where fans are constantly talking. Unfortunately, fans weren’t used to the sit-down environment of the “theater style” shows. At first everyone was respectful (with some dancing fans going to the back to dance away without obscuring someone’s view of the stage). Of course, all that changed when the second set of Matisyahu when everyone stood up (with encouragement from the singer).”

Cydeways to open.

Cherry Glazerr
with Wombo
at Fine Line

first-avenue.com

Los Angeles’ Cherry Glazerr (led by Clementine Creevy) will be headlining the Fine Line Music Café, in Minneapolis, on March 8, 2024, in support of the new album I Don’t Want You Anymore (Secretly Canadian).

The “mature” album, I Don’t Want You Anymore was co-produced with Yves Rothman (Yves Tumor, Blondshell, Amaarae), and is in reference to her personal growth.

The New York Times describes it as an album that “wrestles with a clearly toxic relationship. As the songs go style-hopping — explosive grunge, chugging synth-pop, hints of funk and jazz — the obsession persists.”

Louisville Kentucky based trio Wombo to open.

Mary Timony
with youbet
at 7th St Entry

first-avenue.com

Mary Timony is from one of my favorite bands, Helium. Unfortunately, the band broke up in 1999. Timony continues on as solo artist and also started Ex Hex in 2013.

Timony’s first new solo album in 15 years is called Untame the Tiger. The record comes out February 23rd on Merge Records, and there will be a 2024 tour to support the album.

She’ll be stopping by the 7th Street Entry again on March 9, 2024, with youbet as support act.

It’ll be good to see Timony again at the tiny venue, as we last seen her solo (note: not as “The Mary Timony Band”) in May 25, 2005. Yes, 19 years ago!

We also caught Mary Timony’s band Ex Hex at the Triple Rock Social Club, in July 20, 2015, and wrote, “I’ve said this before, but I’m a big Helium fan, the band that featured Mary Timony. Although I never saw Helium, I did catch Timony when she toured in 2005, in support of her Ex Hex album. Of course, nearly ten years later, she would form a new band Ex Hex with Betsy Wright and Laura Harris. As expected with bands with only one album, the trio played their entire album live… but throwing in a cover or two to stretch out the time for a full set. Most of the songs were sung by Timony, except Wright took over two songs on their set: “How You Got That Girl” and “Radio On”.”
