Mdou Moctar
with FACS
at First Avenue
first-avenue.com
Nigerien desert blues band Mdou Moctar is headlining First Avenue, in Minneapolis, on October 14, 2024. The band is touring in support of Funeral for Justice, out now on Matador Records. The album was written after two years of constant touring across the globe, and has a slant on the plight of Niger and the Tuareg people.
Mdou Moctar explains, ‘This album is really different for me. Now the problems of terrorist violence are more serious in Africa. When the US and Europe came here, they said they’re going to help us, but what we see is really different. They never help us to find a solution.”
We saw Mdou Moctar in Mar 2022, and wrote, “Of course, the Niger band loves coming back to Minneapolis. They played a solid set of mostly instrumental songs from Afrique Victime. The audience were all on board, clapping and hand-waving at all the songs. If the audience weren’t fans of the group before, they became fans after seeing this show.”

Superchunk
with Quivers
at First Avenue
first-avenue.com
Superchunk is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Foolish. This important album was the fourth album from Superchunk, previously known as Chunk, when Laura Ballance & Mac McCaughan formed Merge Records in the summer of 1989. If you love that album, here’s your chance to hear it played live.
Of the tour, Mac McCaughan said:
We previously caught Superchunk’s live bassist Jason Narducy (who replaced Balance when she had to stop touring) in Oct 2023 and said, “Despite being around for four decades, he confessed he’s never played the Cedar Cultural Center. It’s not surprising, because the Cedar don’t normally book rock or punk bands, their focus is on World Music and the NPR audience. One of the stories he told early in his set was how his daughter was really into Destroy Boys. So, being the rock dad, he took his kids to Riot Fest and ultimately got the band (particularly guitarist Violet) to meet his daughter. She was crying “tears of joy”, and it was a moment she’ll probably never forget. What was the point to the story? Narducy ended, “The point is buy Destroy Boys records!””
Melbourne’s Quivers to open. We previously mentioned their Golden Doubt album in June 2021, and it looks like they have a new album Oyster Cuts, which just came out on Merge Records on August 9.

The Psychedelic Furs & The Jesus and Mary Chain
with Frankie Rose
at Palace Theatre
first-avenue.com
Bring on the ‘80s and ‘90s Brit-rock nostalgia: Longtime Scottish indie rockers The Jesus and Mary Chain are amping up the fuzzy guitar rock with the announcement of a co-headlining North American tour this fall with scratchy-voiced ‘80s new wave band Psychedelic Furs, also featuring special guest Frankie Rose of Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls. The co-headlining tour will stop in at the Palace Theatre in St Paul, on October 17, 2024.
The last time we saw Scotland’s The Jesus and Mary Chain (led by Jim Reid and his brother William), it was also at the Palace Theatre in May 2017, writing, “In typical JAMC fashion, the band played on a poorly lit stage, with a lot of backlighting (making for darkened silhouettes), and plenty of fog from a smoke machine. The smoke machine worked overtime, and during ‘Reverence’, causing the curtains to fall down and the fire alarm (complete with flashing lights) to go off and ending their set temporarily. After some confusion, the venue announced the band will be back. They did come back to finish the song midway, but they just couldn’t catch a break, as the curtains started to fall again!”
Having released their latest album, Glasgow Eyes, just this spring, the band have been on a touring frenzy this year, and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Glasgow Eyes focused more on synth-heavy sounds than JAMC’s traditional dreamy guitar rock, but you can likely expect the band to play at least some of the hits that made them famous.
The last time we saw London’s The Psychedelic Furs (led by Richard Butler and his brother Tim Butler), it was at the Palace Theatre in July 2022, writing, “This time around, they played their signature song, “Pretty in Pink” (everyone helped sing this song) in the middle of the set, and their second hit, “Love My Way” as the penultimate set closer. Since Minneapolis/St Paul never got a Made of Rain tour (the record came out in 2020), they group made up for lost time by including some new songs on their set, including “The Boy That Invented Rock & Roll” and “Wrong Train”.”
Frankie Rose to open. We last saw Frankie Rose in May 2023 and wrote, “Frankie Rose next took the stage with her band. We last saw her in 2013 opening up for Franz Ferdinand at the Skyway Theater, promoting her album Herein Wild. And it has been over six years since she last released an album. She actually completed one close to three years ago, but due to the pandemic and being a victim to vinyl production backlogs, she is finally on the road promoting Love as Projection, which The Big Takeover Magazine thought could be part of the Stranger Things soundtrack. It is a retro love letter to the type of electronic pop that would find a home in any John Hughes movie.”
Tour dates:
- 09/29 – Philadelphia, Franklin Music Hall
- 10/01 – New Haven, College Street Music Hall
- 10/02 – Boston, Orpheum Theater

Johnny Marr and James
at Palace Theatre
first-avenue.com
Manchester’s greatest, Johnny Marr and James, are co-headlining the Palace Theatre.
Fans of The Smiths should already know Marr as their guitarist… but did you know that early in the Smith actually covered James’ “What’s the World?”.
James, on the other hand, covered Morrissey’s “We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful” as “We Hate It When Our Friends Become So Stressful.” The story behind this is that Tim Booth claims that the song was about his band becoming successful, so it’s somewhat of a stab at Morrissey’s general direction. You can hear the cover on YouTube.
This should be a wonderful show.
We last saw Johnny Marr in Sep 2018 and wrote, “Godlike Genius Award winner Johnny Marr returned to the Varsity Theater on Monday night. He has a full backing band, which included bassist Iwan Gronow, drummer Jack Mitchell, and guitarist James Doviak. This current 2018 Call The Comet tour set is, by far, the best set yet. This is mostly thanks to some classic The Smiths songs, and a pair of Electronic songs! ”

Everclear
with Marcy Playground and Jimmie’s Chicken Shack
at First Avenue
first-avenue.com
Everclear is headlining First Avenue this October 20, 2024.
We saw Everclear in Sep 2023 and wrote, “As the Pink Spiders said earlier, get ready for “two hours of hit songs!”… and that’s what Everclear delivered. Everyone who grew up in the 90s knows the famous Portland band. The group, led by Art Alexakis, had found success when they signed to Capitol Records in the mid-90s. Their two famous singles, “Santa Monica” and “I Will Buy You a New Life”, which, of course, they played on their set.”
