Something for the Weekend: Earlimart and NIN
Earlimartearlimartmusic.com
When I lived in L.A. in the early aughts, I used to drive over to Spaceland and other eastside venues to catch the kind of local acts exemplified by Earlimart. Before Elliott Smith died in Echo Park in 2003, this sound was alive and thriving in L.A. It was a vibe, for sure—driving late nights on Sunset east of Hollywood, imbued with the spirit of thoughtful indie rock on the subtler side, in the vein of compatriots like Smith and Grandaddy. Earlimart—the duo of singer/guitarist Aaron Espinoza and bassist/keyboardist/singer Ariana Murray—is ready to dial up the nostalgia machine with a one-off show on March 1 at San Francisco’s Bottom of the Hill, with support from fime and Poppy Patica.
You’ll probably hear tracks from Treble & Tremble, an album which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, and was often thought of as a tribute album to Smith.
NOTE: This show is part of the Noise Pop Festival event, which promises ten days with 160+ bands, taking place throughout San Francisco Bay Area.
