at First Avenue

The modern lover himself, Jonathan Richman, to return to Minneapolis on October 16, 2025. He will be bringing along his pal Tommy Larkins on the drums.

Richman’s new album Only Frozen Sky Anyway is out now on Blue Arrow Records, and the record features former Modern Lovers band member Jerry Harrison… worth checking out if you’re going to the show!

We saw Richman many moons ago in June 2012: “Jonathan Richman has the kind of rock ‘n roll holiness reserved for someone like Leonard Cohen. But where Cohen is all hushed poetic passages and melancholy overtures, Richman inspires the kind of reaction that could only be found in a Baptist church on a Sunday morning. Dressed in yoga pants and slippers, with a long-sleeved green shirt over a black and white striped shirt, Richman padded across the Cedar Cultural Center’s stage looking like a Parisian street corner balladeer, his arms wide open ready to embrace the entire audience. An excited young fan near the front held up a glittery and feathered sign (“Jonathan, be my little dinosaur”) and Richman pointed at it and smiled and then patted his chest in gratitude as the entire room erupted in applause.”

Tour Dates:

October 17, 2025 Friday
Paul McCartney
at US Bank Stadium

Beatles legend Paul McCartney will be headlining the US Bank Stadium, in Minneapolis, as part of his “Got Back” tour.

We saw McCartney in May 2016 and wrote, “The show seemed a tale of two halves, with the first half being more for himself, taken up by several songs from McCartney’s last release, 2013’s New (on Hear Music), and assorted deep cuts with some hits peppered in, and the second half being for the fans- a hit-filled cavalcade of one classic song after another.”

Tour Dates

October 18, 2025 Saturday
Miki Berenyi Trio
with Gina Birch and The Unreasonables and DJ Jake Rudh
at Turf Club

We last saw the Miki in June 2024 and wrote, “The audience who attended the Miki Berenyi Trio’s sold-out show at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall seemed to love the sass. But even more, they cheered a setlist full of songs from Lush and Piroshka, Berenyi’s previous bands. Mixed in with the walls of guitar and airy vocals, Berenyi dutifully delivered the hits that any legacy band knows to deliver to the fans, including Lush’s 1996 single, “Ladykillers,” part of an encore where they just pretended to leave the stage but really just stayed put, doing away with the pretense. (Although the audience did do the traditional “Please play some more!” cheering and foot-stomping, for which Berenyi was suitably amused.) But this version they offered was less “britpop” and more venomous, leaning towards a gothic-industrial mood. The whole night had a spooky vibe, a haunted mansion of atmospheric guitar and vocals trying both to summon and wake the dead.”

Gina Birch and The Unreasonables to open, with DJ Jake Rudh on the turntables.
