Flashback: Cat Power at 400 Bar, Minneapolis (December 15, 2000)
I previously mentioned that I saw Cat Power at the 400 Bar, “many, many years ago” at her show at Mill City Nights, Minneapolis (October 30, 2012).
I’ve really nothing new to add, other than that I first moved to Minneapolis in 1998 and those early years I was still getting familiar with the area, including the 400 Bar. Saw Cat Power at the 400 in 2000. This tour was around or during her Covers Records, from Matador Records, which quickly established her as the cover lover queen. I absolutely love her version of “Sea of Love”, which sounds much better coming from her soothing voice.
The scene is dark, Chan Marshall and her grand piano. Spent most of the time looking down, closing her eyes as she sang her songs… as if she wasn’t on stage. She was certain shy about performing, and I really wish I had a camera back then… because after this, she always requests no cameras at her show.
The reasons why we’re looking back at Cat Power, is because she recently announced the 20th Anniversary of The Greatest, with Redux, a 3-song EP arriving on January 23, 2026, via Domino Recording Company.
With the Anniversary, there will also be a 2026 tour to celebrate The Greatest.
