Following a historic performance as a guest of Tom Morello at First Avenue, Bruce Springsteen returned to Minneapolis to open his 20-date Land of Hopes and Dreams Tour downtown at the Target Center.

He’d even come to town a few days early to play the anti-ICE anthem “Streets of Minneapolis” at the No Kings III Rally, a day that brought more than 200,000 people into the Minnesota streets and over 8 million people nationwide, in support of democracy and bringing attention to the egregious acts done by the current administration.

Springsteen and The E Street Band played, as usual, almost three hours, debuting that aforementioned anthem with the whole band for the first time, began the set with a Temptations cover not heard live since 2003, and being in the late Purple One’s hometown, covered “Purple Rain” for the first time in a decade, when the band played it at Barclays Center in Brooklyn in April 2016, just days after Prince’s death.

Morello began the show with the band, playing the first three songs, then disappeared backstage only to re-emerge for three more mini-sets accompanying Bruce and the E Street Band.

Springsteen worked in a snippet of “People Get Ready” during “Land of Hope and Dreams” and finished the evening with the Dylan cover of “Chimes of Freedom” making no mystery or pretense what the tour was made to represent and continuing Springsteen’s decades of outspoken social justice (anyone remember his Sept 1979 set at the No Nukes concert at Madison Square Garden?).

We previously told you about the Nugs.net livestream of the first two songs live (it can still be seen here on YouTube) but we also dispatched our intrepid fans-in-the-stands, The Coco Boys, armed only with their simple cellphones, to help document opening night of this important tour. Enjoy!
