DC Comics
DC Comics is an American comic book publisher owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. DC is an initialism for Detective Comics, a comic book series first published in 1937. DC Comics is one of the largest and oldest American comic book companies, the first comic under the DC banner being published in 1937
Today (May 2) is Free Comic Book Day. FCBD started in 2002, and for the first decade, it was fun and it was easy to just walk into a comic book store and collect all the free comics. Then, as the years went on, it was harder to get everything. Some stores would only stock the major titles, so you had to visit several stores to collect them all. Then, a few years in, I would show up to a store and most of their free comics were gone. At that point, FCBD had gotten so popular that I just didn’t bother to celebrate.
It’s the same this year, I didn’t bother to make it to my local comic book store… I gave myself all kind of excuses like was raining (it rained all day today). What will end up happening is that I will likely make it out to a store in a few days and just grab whatever they have left, even though I have no need for these free comic books. The comics, themselves, are just promotional material and may only print previews or just plain advertisements for their upcoming books.
Instead, what I think I’ll do today is to regularly “review” books that I buy… which may not be that frequent. One of my goals is to own all the DC Finest books, but due to budget, realistically, I have to strip down to just a select few titles and sale prices.
If you aren’t familiar with DC Finest, this is a line of books that is basically copying the Marvel’s Epic Collection. Although DC came into the game late (starting in late 2024), the company is aggressively pumping out four DC Finest books a month. As of this writing, there are close to 75 DC Finest books (within two years!)
One of the books I recently picked up was Super Friends: The Fury of the Super Foes. The book was published on November 4, 2025, and is currently on sale for $20 (which is the reason why I bought it).
What is odd about this collection is that it collects 90% of the original Super Friends comic book series. That series originally ran to 28 issues, but this collection only collects 26 – missing the last two issues. This suggests there will be a volume 2 to this Super Friends collection… but what else are they going to throw in the second volume? It just seems silly that they didn’t collect the last two issues.
The thing with Super Friends is that it’s not part of the DC Universe, so any stories that takes place in Super Friends doesn’t affect or really matter. Plus, there are characters that is exclusive to the Super Friends universe (and the cartoon series) like the Wonder Twins.
Although I watched the Super Friends cartoon when I was growing up, I never religiously followed the series. I found the animation too stiff or dull to my liking. To give you an idea what I was into – I was really into Thundercats and GI Joe and Transformers. During this time, Super Friends were phasing out. I still recognize the importance of the cartoon and what it’s done for kids getting into DC Comics.
The comics was supposed to bring the cartoon to readers. The series was introduced in 1976, which was a little before my time, so I really appreciate DC for reprinting these books that is pretty lost in time for me. What surprised me is that the popular Wonder Twins (and Gleek) wasn’t introduced until #7. The Twins basically displace Marv & Wendy (and Wonder Dog). If you watched the cartoon, the twins activate their powers with Zan turning into water-ish stuff and Jayna turning into animals.
The stories are kind of lame and some are just silly. Since they don’t affect the DC Universe, it really didn’t matter what team-ups or villains they have to fight. Since it was written for a much younger audience, the stories are also much tamer than what you would find in a regular JLA book.
Also presented here are Limited Collectors’ Edition #41 and Limited Collectors’ Edition #46, which had some rare Alex Toth designs and art.
