Sonny Knight and the Lakers at In Cahoots – Red Stag Block Party, Minneapolis (03 Aug 2014)

The sun was high in the sky, humidity was rising, and temperatures flirted near 90 degrees, but it was still “Knight Time”. And, “Knight Time” proved to be the right time, as local retro-soul band Sonny Knight and the Lakers closed out the annual In Cahoots- Red Stag Block Party in Northeast Minneapolis yesterday. The main focus of the event was to have eight of the area’s burgeoning local craft brewers paired up in teams, to each create a new brew, that the crowd would then sample, and vote for the best recipe (spoiler alert: the Fulton/Dangerous Man Brewing combination was far and away the winner).

Paul McCartney just showed us all up. While most 72 year olds are contemplating a home in Boca Raton or counting the minutes until the early-bird dinner specials start, Sir Paul had the day named after him by the state’s governor and played 39 songs in 2 hours 45 min., at a very sold-out Target Field on a clear Saturday night in Minneapolis.

Despite my clarifying to anyone asking, I still remained at a bit of a loss of words describing Leeds, England’s Eagulls (pronounced the same but NOT 'The Eagles') who played a breakneck 45 min. set  at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last week.  The buzzing post-punk/garage rock band is in the midst of a brief U.S. Tour, in support of their self-titled debut (on Partisan Records) that has everyone currently talking.

This wasn’t another Twin Cities-area border battle- Birmingham, Alabama soul upstarts, St. Paul and the Broken Bones hit town at the Varsity Theater earlier this week and all but literally blew the roof off the place.

Free Comic Book Day is alive and well in the Twin Cities! The nationwide event, now in its 12th year, was celebrated in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area by most comic book stores opening their doors to welcome readers with a huge array of free comic books and associated sales and promotions.

Austin, TX bred The Sword headlined the evening with a 75 min. set of no-frills, so-called stoner doom metal… that inexplicably began with the intro music of Jay-Z’s ’99 Problems’. The four-piece is out in support of its fourth and latest effort, Apocryphon (Razor and Tie), with song titles not out of place in a Tolkien novel or as an episode name on Game of Thrones. While the newer songs embrace more of a classic hard rock sound (think early Sabbath), they fit seamlessly within the context of the older, darker material.
