In 1996,  their hit song "Popular"  from the album  "High/Low" made Nada Surf an MTV buzz band,  although their   two   albums  following  " The Proximity Effect"  (2000)  and "Let Go" (2003) they made afterward didn't attract much mainstream attention… which is why I hadn't heard much from the band until their  last album " The Weight is  A Gift" (1995), produced by Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie).

While  "Popular" is a bit more aggressive,   "Always Love"   is an instant feel good song with catchy lyrics and singer Matthew Caws vocals are so melodic and beautiful it undertones emotion put to good use.  You know the kind of song that has just the right amount of sadness to balance the joy that ends up making it an easy sing along.  In the end, it sums up to be one of those good life songs.    My four year old son loves this song too.   While eating pizza tonight for dinner, he was singing  "always love, hate will get you everytime", claiming he had this song in his head, not to mention, so do I all the time.

always love
even when you want to fight

self-directed lives
i want to know what it'd be like to
aim so high above
every card that you get dealt you

always love
hate will get you every time
always love
hate will get you
and i've been held back by something
you said to me quietly on the stairs
you said
hey you good ones

  1. [this is good] This is one of my safety songs (those songs that keep you just this side of depression). “The right amount of sadness to balance the joy” – fer shure!!I recently heard the 70s band America cover this song on their recent release. It wasn’t so good. Why cover such a perfectly written, produced and performed song? It just invites blogacisms.

  2. [this is good] Let Go is one of my most favorite albums. If you haven’t heard it, please pick it up! It’s so worth it.
