I don’t actually own 2007’s White Chalk by Polly Jean Harvey, or better known as PJ Harvey, but I do have her latest 2-track single called The Devil. This was released last month on iTunes as well as 7″ and CD single from Universal Music.
I can’t say that I like the new song, it doesn’t quite have her poppier/guitar pop of “Good Fortune” (from Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea) or her debut single of “Sheela-Na-Gig” (from Dry).
Instead, “The Devil” is a falsetto-ey song, backed with some piano. I
think they were going for eerie or creepy, and I am not sure what to
expect of it. Perhaps if you’re in the mood, this might be a great
song… otherwise, I suggest checking out her earlier albums.
If you want creepy, there’s nothing more weird than “Down by the Water” (from To Bring You My Love).
This is only really crazy when PJ does this fish-like dance when she
perform live during her whispery “little fish, big fish, swimming in
the water” bit. Her skeleton frame swooshing back and forth is just
plain creepy.
Admittedly, I actually haven’t heard anything else from White Chaulk except for “The Devil”, so I won’t dismiss the album just yet… but judging from the cover art, it looks like the theme might be old-fashion type music?
