Discography

[2007] This Is the Life

[2010] A Curious Thing

There’s no denying that Amy Macdonald exploded on the UK charts, moving over three million of her debut album, This is a Life in 2007. But curiously, her presence in the United States have been largely ignored, due to lack of proper promotion here.

It would seem that Macdonald is bound to be repeating this with her sophomore album, A Curious Thing, again with little support for the US. I can tell you that this second album have reached #1 on pan-European sales and also #1 in Germany and Austria. This can only mean that her live shows will be quickly selling out, so get your tickets now if you can.

I have been listening to A Curious Thing in my car this past week. I can tell you that if you like women singers, like Dolores O’Riordan and, recently, Florence and the Machine, you’ll absolutely fall in love with Macdonald.

And speaking of falling in love, obviously Macdonald is easy-on-the-eyes, and it sounds to me like she’s trying to defend this with her song, “This Pretty Face”. It’s a song about what matters is on the inside and not just having pretty face. I do get a sense that most of her songs are about her (for instance, “Next Big Thing”, “An Ordinary Life”, and “What Happiness Means To Me”), so the album feels personal. The theme I get out of her album is one of fame and perception and relationship.

I was actually kind of surprise that most of her songs are pretty loud, very rocking. While this is not a bad thing, but I think sometime I prefer the softer songs, such as “My Only One”, to highlight Macdonald’s beautiful voice.

A Curious Thing is out now on Mercury Records in the UK. I do no believe the album is released domestically, so you may have to do the import-thing.
