Lindi Ortega

Lindi Ortega's third LP Tin Star debut on the top 10 of the Americana chart. Her album was praised by Country Weekly, calling Ortega's music as "haunting" and "atmospheric", while NPR called it "gorgeous". â€¦

Lindi Ortega, along with her veil and little red boots, is currently on tour in support of Tin Star, stopping by the Icehouse in Minneapolis last night, November 3rd.

BRETT DETAR

Brett Detar was the opener, a one-man band who played some folksy, country music with his banjo and acoustic guitar. This is a stark contrast to his previous efforts as guitarist for metalcore Zao and emo band The Juliana Theory. He played tracks from his albums Bird in the Tangle and Too Free to Live (the latter is actually available as a free download, because he felt that it was more important that people listen it).

Seven songs from his set was mostly taken from the new album, kicking off with "Satan's Foot On My Neck", followed by "Damaged Girl". He switched over to acoustic (from banjo) with an older "Coasts" from Bird in the Tangle.

Funny enough, he dedicated the title track "Too Free To Live" to Snoop Doggy Dogg, because it's about a murder spree with someone you love.
He ended his set with "The Devil's Gotta' Earn", which made for a nice circle with the 'Satan' song earlier.

So, I did listen to Lindi Ortega's latest album, Tin Star, to get a sense of what to expect for her show. The album was described as "country", but I think this is unfair to her music. I do detect some country influences, sure, but I wouldn't exactly call it country.

As you can setlist, most of the songs are taken from Tin Star, starting off with the title track, "Tin Star", followed by "Hard As This" (my favorite from the new album) and "Waitin' On My Luck To Change".

Ortega had some great banter on stage, they seem strangely deadpanned and rehearsed. From the invisible 'doobie' to pretending to be 'John Tesh', she's quite an entertaining storyteller.
The last time she was in Minneapolis (at the 7th Street Entry), I gathered that she got super drunk and chipped a tooth drinking shots all night.

Other random stories that I thought was too funny to not mention, was the very first time she went on national tour opening up for Kevin Costner's band. All she could think of, was "Wow, that's the actor from 'Dances With Wolves'".

Highlight of the set was a slower song called "Lived And Died Alone", which Ortega said, "This is the first song I've written about necrophilia".

For the encore, the very last song, she gave us the option to hear "Little Red Boots" (since she didn't sing it earlier) or "The Day You Die". The audience chose the latter, so they finished with "The Day You Die" from 2012's Cigarettes & Truckstops.
