Sleep Study

Locals Sleep Study got the evening started with 35 min. of retro power pop with slight UK influences, including singles ‘Flower Girl’ and ‘Peace & Letting Go’, and even worked in a novel cover of Tears for Fears …

Normally, Ottawa’s Hollerado is actually on tour with The Sam Roberts Band, however for this Saturday night (January 28th), they’re headlining the 7th Street Entry, while SRB was asked to perform at The Current’s 12th Birthday Party next door at the mainroom.

Sleep Study

Opening up the show was Sleep Study, starting at 9pm. We caught the local band a few years ago, and like last time, they were a trio, led by singer/guitarist Ryan Plewacki, and they covered Buzzcocks’ ‘Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve)’.

Savoy Motel

Nashville’s Savoy Motel was up next. The gargey / psychedelica / 70’s inspired band is normally touring with The Lemon Twigs (however, like The Sam Roberts Band, they were asked to play at the sold-out The Current show).

The four-piece features bassist Jeffrey Novak, drummer Jessica McFarland, guitarists Dillon Watson and Mimi Galbierz, all took part in singing (lead or backup) songs from their self-titled debut album (What’s Your Rupture? Records), such as ‘Sorry People’.

Their set was familiarly similar to their first Minneapolis appearance with The Dandy Warhols in September 2016… but they appeared to be more confident and talkative on their appearance last night. They’re still a very young band, so expect more great things from this band.

Canada’s Hollerado took the stage earlier than advertised, starting their set with some of their favorite songs to play live, including their biggest hit song ‘Americanarama’ (which got the crowds pumping and dancing hard). After ‘Americanarama’, singer Menno Versteeg announced that they will be playing unreleased songs from their forthcoming album … set for release sometime this Spring 2017 (just in time for SXSW, I reckon).

As promised, the band played a lot of new songs, including a track they called ‘Eloise’ and something called ‘I Got You’ (a song about being “rich and an a******”).

Hearing the new songs live for the first time, I can tell you that it is classic Hollerado’s standard sound… that is about fun and not to be taken too seriously.

Midway in their set, Versteeg reminisce the last the band was in town, it was about four years ago at the same venue. They were coming down from Chicago and were trying to make time, as they were running late. In fact, they were speeding the entire way and was eventually pulled over by the police. As the officer was writing them a ticket, they asked the cop, “How fast can we go, without getting caught?”.

The punchline was that on that 25 November 2013 night, the band made a record time of setting up and ready to play on stage in seven minutes.

Hollerado ended their set with ‘So It Goes’, and tomorrow resumes their tour with fellow Canadian band The Sam Roberts Band.
