■ Slayer
Slayer is an American thrash metal band from Huntington Park, California, formed in 1981 by guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, drummer Dave Lombardo and vocalist/bassist Tom Araya. Slayer’s fast and aggressive musical style made them one of the “big four” bands of thrash metal, alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax.

Minnesota was fortunate enough to have Slayer kick off their tour this year in celebration of the 40th anniversary of their 1986 album Reign in Blood. Tori Amos fans know “Raining Blood” as her only Slayer cover. That should be a testament of how wide their reach is, how classic their music is known to be. If you’re able to see them in 2026, don’t miss out, they’re playing a very limited number of shows.

Love breeds from Hatebreed as they took to the stage. The pictures don’t do them justice since they started about an hour prior to dusk and the sun was brutal. Jamey Jasta (the lead singer of Hatebreed) has been kind to W♥M welcoming us to join him in the recent renewals of the Milwaukee Metal Fest, likewise also advertising to the crowd to come hang out with them in 2027. Slayer was there a couple of decades ago as well, showing the amazing history of this community.

Every band that took to the stage were behemoths of metal, the next being Suicidal Tendencies, they played the metal fest this year back in June. Also back in June, this venue opened its doors officially, the Mystic Lake Amphitheater. Parking was organized so was a breeze. The space was airy and the seating options were varied. Walking around the astroturf lawn area, spying on the games and food trucks, we would definitely come back.

Up next was the supergroup Down, who played the metal fest last year in 2025. Fronted by Phil Anselmo, metal fans know him as the vocalist from Pantera, said that this September 4th date was their only show with this tour.

Slayer is known as one of “the big four” of thrash metal, standing alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Their album Reign in Blood is one of the most influential albums of all time. Slayer played their beloved album in sequential order (for the second half of their set) with no encore, just a heartfelt thanks to the massive crowd.

A documentary started their set, detailing their past having played in tiny venues nearly half a century ago. Backed by art that was spectacularly artsy, and pyrotechnics that spared no expense, we could feel the heat coming from the flames in the 200+ section. I wondered if the people in the pit had any eyebrows left at the end of the night but even if they left with them singed, it would have been totally worth it.
