The 20th Annual Free Comic Book Day celebration was held at participating specialty shops and featured some fifty different no-charge titles available to customers from publishers both small and large.
Typically held the first Saturday of May, the event was postponed this year to August 14 (thanks Covid) with most shops also dialing back their usual additional promotions such as guests, complimentary food, and cosplayers, due to a resurgence in the pandemic.
Joe Field, founder of Free Comic Book Day and owner of Flying Colors Comics & Other Cool Stuff in Concord, CA said, “Celebrating 20 years of FCBD is a fantastic milestone. Free Comic Book Day has been the introduction to comics for so many and while the world has changed over these last 20 years, our love of comics and the power of comics to entertain and enlighten is stronger than ever.”
Coca-Cola was on board for the first time as the major sponsor and in addition to comics, this anniversary included themed t-shirts, posters and an exclusive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figure set available for purchase. Check with your local shop for any possible remainders.
Most stores had additional sales and promotions to mark the busy shopping day and barring any extended public health crisis, the event should return in 2022 to its normal May schedule.
