If you love French cinema and French music, you will know the name of the British/French actress and singer Jane Birkin. She recently passed away at the age of 76.

She first gained international fame for her musical and romantic partnership with Serge Gainsbourg. Her daughter with Serge, Charlotte Gainsbourg took on her parents’ interests of music (and acting) as she grew up.

Birkin/Gainsbourg first collaborated with their debut album in 1969. The two separated in 1980, and Birkin continued working as an actress and singer, appearing in various films and solo albums.

In addition to music and film, she also had her hands in fashion, lending her name to the Hermès Birkin handbag… although in 2015, she asked Hermes to take her name off the brand: “…Hermès’s iconic and exorbitantly expensive Birkin Bag made its debut, and little about the tote has changed since. While the handbag’s aspirational price point has increased over the years — now falling into the $10,500 to $150,000 range at retail — it may soon receive its most significant update yet, if only at the demand of its namesake, Jane Birkin. On Tuesday, PETA announced that the British-born actress and singer has asked Hermès to rename its crocodile bag after learning of the disturbing practices used in its production.”
