Los Angeles-based rock duo Deap Vally’s final show in St Paul took place on Super Bowl Sunday, February 11th.

The duo recently re-recorded their version of their debut LP, entitled SISTRIONIX 2.0, for the tenth anniversary of their original Sistrionix (which we wrote about in Aug 2013).

Deap Vally (04 June 2013)

This was a bittersweet ending to Deap Vally’s as they return to the venue that they first appeared in June 2013, over a decade ago.

It was the Sistrionix-era that the duo learned so much. They were discovering all the dive bars across the country; it was all an exciting time for the duo. Lindsey Troy said, “It really encapsulates an era — an era of dank, yeasty backstage rooms across the UK, of the endorphin rush of that first wave of success, of youthful drunken, wild nights, of the worldly adventures and the newness of it all.”

For the farewell tour, the band setup a Photo Booth area near the merchandise area, where fans can take selfies or perhaps take photos with the band.

I was worried that it was Super Bowl Sunday, but fortunately, the Venn diagram between Deap Vally and NFL were nonexistent, so the concert was well-attended. A lot of fans showed up to say goodbye to the two girls.

And as promised, Deap Vally played the entire Sistrionix album, with the second part devoted to odds and ends that they wanted to play or were requested to play. See set list for full details.

Opening the show was New York’s Sloppy Jane (aka Haley Dahl). Although it’s only February, I have to confessed, this was probably my favorite opening band so far. They were really fun, and Haley came out as a conductor. Each song had some sort of routine, for example, the cool shades came out for “Where’s My Wife”. She reminded me a little of Tori Amos and maybe some Kate Bush.

I’m kind of kicking myself for missing their headline appearance on October 30, 2022.

I thought it was a big band, but this was actually a downsized version with only violin, bassist/violin, keys, guitarist, and percussion. I guess typically Sloppy Jane is a full 11-piece band and mini-orchestra (and as much as 21 other musicians when they were recording their Madison album).

Sloppy Jane’s album Madison is out now on Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records.
