Elliott Smith Birthday Party!
at White Squirrel Bar

whitesquirrelbar.com

Feeling depressed because it’s Monday? Why not celebrating Elliott Smith’s birthday this August 5, 2024, at the White Squirrel Bar, in St Paul.

I was told that each performer gets to play one song… It would be cool if they got exactly 8 singers as a nod to Figure 8. Not sure how everyone will fit in the small bar… but we will see.

Cults
with BNNY
at Fine Line

first-avenue.com

It’s good to see Multi-platinum breakout duo Cults (Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion) back on tour, in support of To the Ghosts.

Cults at NXNE, Toronto (18 June 2011)

Did I ever tell you we once went to Canada to see Cults play in Jun 2011? We said, “Cults is a favorite among the bloggers, as apparent by the million photographers. Their self-titled album came out a week, or so earlier, on Lily Allen’s record label, In The Name Of, and I guess people are in love with it. They were pretty catchy, even threw in an F word after the lyrics “I can’t be the way you want” (from “Never Saw the Point”). The one thing I will say is that singer Madeline Follin only has one mode of dancing. While not a terrible thing, it’s not a whole lot of stage presence. Look for them on tour on the West Coast in July and some festivals in August.”

BNNY at 7th Street Entry, Minneapolis (06 Aug 2022)

Opening will be BNNY, who we previously saw in Aug 2022 and wrote, “Opening the show was Chicago quartet Bnny, who started with just a quiet solo song from lead singer Jess Viscius. Shortly after that song ended, the rest of her band, which includes her twin sister Alexa Viscius, and Tim Makowski and Matt Pelkey, joined Jess on stage. Laughing she said, “That was the most rock ‘n roll thing I’ve ever done.” The band (and debut record Everything) was created to honor and process the death of Jess’ partner. So many of their songs are somewhat depressing and emotional. Their latest single, “I’m Just Fine”, is about “the sensation of time moving slowly when you are missing someone. It’s about attempting to deny that you are heartbroken in order to protect yourself.””

Old 97’s
at First Avenue
first-avenue.com

The Old 97’s is out touring in support of their new album American Primitive, available on ATO Records.

We last saw The Old 97s in Nov 2013 and wrote, “If the Shades brought the crowd to an enthusiastic boil, then the Old 97s turned the place into an outright volcano of excitement. Bassist Murry Hammond strode out on stage, followed by drummer Philip Peeples sporting a fantastic ‘stache, singer/guitarist and dreamboat extraordinaire Rhett Miller and lead shredder Ken Bethea and they launched into a breathless two-hour set starting with the sing-along classic “Barrier Reef” from the band’s 1997 offering Too Far to Care. The Old 97s have acquired quite a following in their 20-year career and you couldn’t ask for a better audience; the energy off stage was just as potent as the energy on stage. Grown men and women were giggling like schoolchildren, grins plastered on their faces and all eyes adoringly on one of the greatest live bands ever. Miller mentioned several times how much he loved the Twin Cities (he was in St. Paul last month for Wits) – so much that, half way through the set, they unveiled a new song Miller jokingly called “high art.” It’s title? “Let’s Get Drunk And Get it On.” Another toast to the Cities came in the form of a reworked Bob Dylan song; Miller rewrote “Desolation Row” with new lyrics and called it “Champaign, IL,” to Dylan’s approval.”

Update 7/16/24: John Buffalo has been announced as support. The Old 97’s personally asked Buffalo to join them on a short Summer tour. When asked about the invite, John Dufilho (who records as John Buffalo) said, “Having the 97’s put their stamp of approval on my new solo project, John Buffalo, means the world to me. Plus, their crowds are the best. This trip is gonna be crazy fun. I’ve toured with them before, with The Deathray Davies and with I Love Math, but never solo. I’m definitely gonna be trying some new things.”

Music in the Parks
feat. Ber
at Lake Harriet Bandshell

minneapolisparks.org

Ber at Lake Harriet Bandshell on August 9. Anni Xo to open… with Jaws as the movie to play at dusk.

The event is free and open to the public.

We caught Ber in Dec 2022 and wrote, “Ber aka Berit Dybing then took the stage but with some minor complications. That’s what makes 7th Street Entry such a fun musical venue. It’s an incubation tube for new bands and those bands are their own roadies, and they are only a few feet from the audience as they set up their equipment. For a time the band worked on connecting Mike’s (drummer) ear piece. Then Ber’s main mic wasn’t working, which was an important piece of equipment for a lead singer. No matter. Ber was game and set aside any awkwardness by chatting and taking selfies with the crowd.”

It’s an all-day event at the White Squirrel Bar, in St Paul, on Saturday, August 10, 2024. It’s taking place in the parking lot and will features vendors selling their wares. There’s even Angry Line Cook Day food truck if you want something to eat.

Inside the bar, starting at 1pm is FINICK, opening for Eldest Daughter (a band featuring lead singer, and eldest daughter, Monica Merila). Not sure if this is a full band or not, but if it is a full band, it will include lead guitarist Austin Reid, bass player Sonja Quartz Leaf, and drummer Isaac Feia.

Also on the bill is singer/songwriter (and yoga educator) Jordy Vaughn. She recently released New Moon Rising EP.

Taking place outside will be Bethany Larson & The Bees Knees with Johanna Mathews opening.

Bethany Larson & The Bee’s Knees is described as “Twin Cities best kept secrets” by Twin Cities Metro. The Bee’s Knees is the backing band, featuring Bethany’s brother Chris Larson on guitar, keyboard and backing vocals, Alicia Kay on bass and backing vocals, and Sara Horishnyk on drums.

Finally, starting at 9pm, will be Danger Club headlining, with Enemy In The Sky (Kara Dupuy and Eric Kramlinger) and Burning Peasant (who is closing out the show).
