Widow’s Cape
Widow’s Bay (2026)
Apple TV’s latest Widow’s Bay is a new horror series, that seemed like Stephen King gave birth to it. It’s about a mayor who wanted to bring tourism to the small island… except you learned that perhaps the island is cursed. Bringing tourists might not be such a good idea, as it turned out.
My least favorite episode, about that lady that got a self-help book on how to throw a party. The whole time, it was frustrating because I figured what was going on, but the show kept going. And it just seemed like it wasn’t moving the plot forward.
When the show is really good, is when they have a monster of the week. From a ghost hag to a Michael Myers-type slasher… it’s like the show was just writing cliches in horror.
My favorite episodes are the puritan story… which is basically the origin of Widow’s Bay and why it is the way it is.
However, it’s the comedy that just throws me off. I know a lot of people love the comedy, but it was just not for me. Everybody raves about that mushroom episode, but I just found it frustrating. I don’t want my characters doing silly stuff, just move the plot forward.
Regarding comedy elements. I had to look it up, but the show was created by Katie Dippold, who was the writer of Parks and Recreation… which is a political/satire/comedy show… so, I guess if you enjoy Parks & Recs, you’ll probably like Widow’s Bay…. It is just not for me.
Cape Fear (2026)
The new Cape Fear television show from Apple TV is based on The Executioners novel by John D. MacDonald. That book was made into two movies, with the last one directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro. I’ve seen the 1991 film, but it’s been so long, I honestly don’t remember what it was all about. All I remember was that De Niro was stalking a family.
The TV show has an all-star cast, with Spanish actor Javier Bardem as the De Niro character. The family stars Amy Adams (Lois Lane from the Zack Snyder’s Superman film) and Patrick Wilson (from The Conjuring series). Bardem is relentless, violent, and mysterious, and from flashbacks, he’s a very dangerous man. From the few episodes I saw, it sounded like this is a pure revenge thing. Amy Adams & Patrick Wilson sent a man to prison for 17 years. Although the show say that he was an innocent man, the way he carries himself… I’m not so certain. Even the couple that sent him to prison believes he killed his wife… or it could be all that time he spent in prison – he became a monster. While it’s still early for me, I know the family might deserves the payback? From what I can remember from the movie, Robert De Niro was clearly the bad guy.
The other thing you should know is that the show is incredibly violent. That first suicide scene that started the show was the most disturbing. Then the prison fight, in the second episode, is as brutal as you could imagine a prison fight to be. The show doesn’t pull its punches.
My least favorite thing about the show are the two children. The show was updated, so there’s all these social media content and today’s youth of feeling isolation and loneliness. I can’t relate, and I am not really interested in the kids at all. The boy is mentally checked out and he’s suffering from depression or is suicidal or something. The girl is trying to discover her “awakening”, but I feel both their stories should be another show about teenagers… not Cape Fear.
In the later episodes, we’re introduced to two new characters (which I don’t remember from the movie), so I’m not quite sure where the show is heading. But so far, I’m curious how it will all end.
