The New Up – Broken Machine
I have at least six EPs to do another round of 'Attack of the EPs',
but that would require me to do research on all six bands, etc.
Instead, in order to hit some of my deadlines, I've decided to break it
up temporary. Besides, this band deserves its own article.
Broken Machine, by The New Up, was just released yesterday, August 12th,
and on the strength of the infectious lead song "Ginger Tea", I can
tell you this band's been around. They certain hit all their marks and,
especially with the mix and guitar playing at the end, it sounds like
they are old pros at this music thing.
Apparently,
life for the The New Up, originally with "ES" Pitcher, Noah Reid and
Hawk West, in Chicago. By 2003, they found themselves in San Francisco
with two additional new members, Jack McFadden and Dain Dizazzo.
I felt that
the vocals by ES sounds like a little Siouxsie Sioux, but more modern.
Having said that, their songs don't sound modern. That's not a bad
thing, because you know I prefer music from the past. Songs like "Top
Of The Stairs" sounds like it should belong in the 90s, a little bit
alternative-sounding from an aftermath of new wave.
I believe
the song, "Libations", features a duet with guitarist Noah Reid, which
was a nice break because I know he co-writes most of their music and
lyrics.
I couldn't find any information on how you can buy the latest Broken Machine (you can always try contacting them), but it's out now on Evil Cherise Records.
Also, be sure to check them out on tour. I did noticed that they have Minneapolis listed for September 23rd,
which, surprisingly, is a pretty busy date. As far as I know, most of the
major venues are booked for Saturdays up to October (and I didn't recall any of them listing The New Up).
Trivia: The cover artwork, featuring a variety of broken machineries and dolls, is the work of Joel Barber.
