W♥M096: I Don’t Intend to Spend Christmas Without You
Part four of We♥Christmas. Vu picks one of his favorite Christmas song: “I Don’t Intend to Spend Christmas Without You”.
I actually wrote an article about this song three years ago, but it’s such a great song, it’s worth revisiting.
Below are details of each version of the song:
As far as anyone’s concern, Claudine Longet’s version of “I Don’t Intend to Spend Christmas Without You” is the official original version – because it was the first that was commercially released in 1967 and basically was a song commissioned by Longet’s producers. The song was written by Margo Guryan, who recorded a demo of it for Longet. Guryan’s version wasn’t made available until 2001, with her compilation 25 Demos.
St Etienne recorded a cover version of “I Don’t Intend to Spend Christmas Without You”, but for their fanclub only in 1998 for a two-track CD single.
Tomorrow’s World recorded cover version of “I Don’t Intend to Spend Christmas Without You”, appearing on Cherry Tree/El Record‘s The World In Winter compilation in 2000… The Tomorrow’s World song later resurfaced under other El compiliations, such as
Christmas Cocktails With Santa’s Swingin’ Stocking Fillers (2008) and Merry Kitschmas (2009). Collect them all.
Pizzicato Five sampled the “fla-la-la-la” from “I Don’t Intend to Spend Christmas Without You” and based on TV Jesus’ “Room Service” for their song “20th Century Girl” under the US album, Fifth Release from Matador from Matador Records in 2000.
