The Blow

Part art, part performance, part music, and overall entertaining; this is typical The Blow performance.

The Blow, an electro pop duo of Khaela Maricich and Melissa Dyne, stopped by the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis last night, October 15th, as part of their tour in support of their latest self-titled release.

LOVE INKS

Opening up was Austin’s trio Love Inks. The band started their tour last Friday, October 11th, with the Blow and will continue with the Portland duo until ending in New York in November.

Songs from their set were mostly songs from their latest album Generation Club, including “Hearts Up” (a breakup song),
“I’m Gone”,
“Magazine Street”,
“Secret Tattoo” (a song about teenage lust, inspired by Pamela Des Barres’ autobiography I’m With the Band)
“Time”,
“Solar Diary”, and their set closer “Outta Sight”.

Rounding out the rest of their set were from their debut 2011 album E.S.P, including “Can’t Be Wrong”, “Blackeye”, and “Leather Glove”. The latter was a song they jokingly wrote for Lady Gaga.

As for The Blow, I attend a lot of shows and I can tell you that this was one of the most interesting and entertaining shows I’ve seen in a while. Not a typical rock show, this is more like a performance art. The duo understood lighting and atmosphere, as they build their show using sound, silence, light, and dark.
It became apparent to me that every show was unique, particularly when Khaela does her so-called vocal jams.

I didn’t see it on their setlist, but I know the first song they started was “From The Future”, from their latest self-titled record. Between every song were spoken words, which sort of function like a really long introduction to the song. Although Khaela was the star on stage, “you’re only getting half the show if you’re not watching Melissa.”

As expected, many of their songs are from the latest album, including “Invisible”, “Like Girls”, “Make It Up”, and their finale “A Kiss”. The new songs sounded really good on record, but it was even better with the variant jams and foggy atmosphere. So be sure to check out The Blow when they come to your city.
