HAPPY BIRTHDAY JANIS

A Tribute to the Life & Music of Janis Joplin

at 7th Street Entry

Saturday, 01/16/16, 7pm ($13/$15)

first-avenue.com

Celebrate Janis Joplin‘s birthday with Frogleg next Saturday, January 16. Joplin’s birth date is January 19th, she would have been 72.

About local band Frogleg:

Since their first show in late 2012, a major buzz about the band Frogleg has been slowly and organically spreading throughout the Twin Cities music scene with their ever-growing weekly tradition, “Frogleg Thursdays @ Bunkers Music Bar & Grill” in downtown Minneapolis.

Known for their songwriting and improvisational live performances, this five piece would be best described as a soul band, as their influences are not drawn from one specific genre.

A typical Frogleg show will usually feature a unique blend of Bluegrass, Funk, Reggae, Jazz and Rock.

Frogleg’s tour dates:

01/14/16 Frogleg @ Bunker’s

01/16/16 Happy Birthday Janis

01/21/16 Bunker’s Thursday

01/28/16 Bunker’s Thursday

01/29/16 Frogleg at the Aquarium – Fargo, ND

LIVING COLOUR

at Dakota Jazz Club

Sunday, 01/17/16, 7pm ($50-$60)

dakotacooks.com

Gramming-winning hard rockers Living Colour is currently touring in support of their forthcoming Shade album. The record was announced in 2014 for a 2015 release date, however it was eventually pushed back to be released sometime this year (2016).

According to guitarist Vernon Reid, “‘Shade’ is the sound of a band coming to terms with its shadows and light… From the blue pulpit of Robert Johnson to the mean red streets of Brooklyn to the golden lure of Hollywood, ‘Shade’ is the next chapter of a unique American journey.”

You may recall that we previously caught Reid at the Walker Art in April 2014, which we described as “a rare area appearance at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis”

In Prince-like late announcements, I believe the Dakota Jazz Club show next Sunday was only recently announced earlier this week (January 5).

They wrote:

“looking forward to destroying the Dakota Jazz Club and Restaurant Come for a fine evening of ‪#‎DinnerMetal‬ facebook.com tickets are on sale now!”

Living Colour tour dates:

01/14/16 Milwaukee, WI Northern Lights Theater

01/17/16 Minneapolis, MN Dakota Jazz Club

BULLY

with Fake Limbs

at Fine Line Music Cafe

Monday, 01/18/16, 7pm ($15/$30)

finelinemusic.com

Female-fronted Bully will be bringing their grunge-rock to the Fine Line Music Cafe on Monday, January 18th. Last year was huge for these guys as they made their television debut on Conan O’Brien and have made it on multiple “best of” end-of-year lists including The Rolling Stone, Spin, Consequence of Sound, and Noisey, and appearing on Nashville Scene (10-16 Dec 2015). They were all the talk at Lollapalooza and Pitchfork so don’t miss your chance to see them at The Fine Line!

Fake Limbs, will be opening the show. The Chicago natives previously opened up for Bully when they played the 7th Street Entry in October 2015. We previously described the band as “It was intense.”

Fake Limbs said they are part Harry and the Hendersons and part Smokey and the Bandit (the one where all the cops destroyed). If that doesn’t peak your interest, I don’t know what will.
