Band of Skulls

Southampton’s trio Band of Skulls (bass/vocals Emma Richardson, guitars/vocals Russell Marsden and drummer Matt Hayward) is returning to Minneapolis next Sunday, September 11th
Murder Shoes

Local guest Murder Shoes (featuring Tess Weinberg, Christopher White, Derek Van Gieson, Elliot Manthey, and Tim Heinlein) opened the show. We previously caught the band
English rock trio Band of Skulls (singer / guitarist Russell Marsden, singer / bassist Emma Richardson, and drummer Matt) recently headlined the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on September 11th.

Local band Murder Shoes opened up the show… their first time at the Fine Line Music Café, and, also their last, since the band announced this was their very last show together as a band. We later spoke to one of the singer, Tess Weinberg, to find out the reason for the breakup and also what’s in store for the band. Go listen here.

Their 30-min set was similar (if not exactly the same) to their set for Eliot Sumner last June 2016, including unreleased songs like the set closer song ‘Tape Organ’.

Of the three times we’ve seen the band, their last show was their best sounding show… and definitely their finest moment, despite only getting a 30 second soundcheck and without band practice for weeks.

Russell Marsden

The last time we caught Band of Skulls (at First Avenue in June 2014), we compared them to Muse, particularly for their newer songs like ‘Hoochie Coochie’.

With their new album By Default (BMG), they’ve doubled down on that stadium rock sound, but also producing some of the catchiest music hooks and rhythm and some dance elements.

In fact, with the dance thing, the first thing that singer Russell Marsden said was, “So the plan is: we’re going to dance.”

Each song they played from By Default sounded thunderous and energetic, although fans seemed to respond better to their old classic hits, especially for ‘Blood’, and later during the encore for ‘I Know What I Am’.

Also, fans loved singing along to ‘You’re Not Pretty But You Got it Going On’, taken from their 2012 record Sweet Sour.

Although fans begged to hear the old songs, personally speaking, Band of Skulls’ new songs are some of their boldest and best songs they’ve ever written.

Bassist Emma Richardson’s role in the band also seemed to have been upgraded – I felt she was singing on more songs, which is always a welcome.

By Default is out now on BMG, go check Band of Skulls on tour now.
