mehro at 7th St Entry, Minneapolis (21 Feb 2024)

It’s the first night of the tour, and everyone on this mehro’s “Reason to Live” tour was excited to start the tour at the intimate 7th Street Entry, in Minneapolis, on Wednesday night.



Oakland’s King Isis opened this all-ages show, on their very first national tour… making this their first time in Minneapolis. When asked if there was anything to do in town, someone shouted the Como Zoo Conservatory, while others said thrift shopping (opposite of ‘Mall of America’ that someone else replied).



With only a few EPs released (including the new shed EP that came out March 21 on No Matter / Dirty Hit), King Isis played a few tracks, including “macho man”, “never really”, and new single “Make It Up”. A few covers thrown in to make up the rest of the set, includes Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, and the popular Billie Eilish song “Happier Than Ever” (plenty of audience singing along).

It’s good to see mehro back in town, a year ago, in Feb 2023, we saw him with a very brief 20-min set that included only four songs. Still, we mentioned that he had a captivated audience who wanted to hear more songs: “Sporting his own merch, mehro started off the evening with a brief set (four songs: Pirate Song, Can’t You Talk to Me, Whore and Chance with You.) On the scene since 2020 his music is introspective and would find a home in any coffee shop or cellar speakeasy where the acoustics of his guitar play and evocative voice would be fully appreciated. Even at the Fine Line he found a captive crowd that was quite disappointed when he started to thank everybody and wrapped up his set.”

Like last time he was wearing his own merch (the song “whore”)… but with a full set, mehro, was able to personally connect with his fans. He had plenty of time to talk to the audience, and explained some of his heart-breaking songs. For example, “hideous”, came out from a complicated relationship he had. At a party in Santa Monica, he saw this person being cold to him, and it’s at that party that he found a guitar and wrote the song.



If you listen to any of mehro’s songs, they are all songs from his experience and feeling. For example, “dopamine”, which started his set, it’s a dreamy song about despair, “I wanted to make a song from the depths of despair, just on the other side of the invisible line. So hurt that the only way to survive is to step outside of any perspective…”



In the middle of his set, his band left the stage, leaving mehro to do a three-song acoustic mini-set, starting with “who are you.”



The rest of the set includes songs from his latest album Dark Corners and Alchemy, which came out in March 2023 to critical praise… but also includes a couple of brand new songs, including “cynical” (coming out May 2), “reason to live” (March 22) and “lady parts and mannequins” (May 2).
