Shawn the Prawn
The hottest band in the world, Royel Otis, have long sold out their bigger First Avenue show on September 15, 2024. The Sydney duo recently sold out their first appearance at the Amsterdam Bar in April 2024.

Chicago band Friko (vocalist/guitarist Niko Kapetan and drummer Bailey Minzenberger) opened the show.

Prior to their First Avenue appearance, the full band stopped for a signing of their album Where we’ve been, Where we go from here (ATO Records) and live session at the Electric Fetus record store, in Minneapolis.

The group is known for their high-energy live shows, and they certainly let loose on the main stage at First Avenue. Singer Niko mentioned that being on stage and playing to an audience was their dream. Playing at the venue that Prince made famous, well, that was a dream come true. You can tell that the band idolized Minneapolis and the First Avenue venue.

Still hot on the music scene, Royel Otis is now playing the much bigger First Avenue. With the bigger stage, they were able to fit more backdrop… including a humongous shrimp in the background. The shrimp, or prawn, as the Australian calls them, is taken from their “Oysters in My Pocket” music video.

Currently, the shrimp doesn’t have a name, but the internet all seemed to agree to call it “Shawn the Prawn.”

Royel Otis at Amsterdam Bar (23 Apr 2024)

We were lucky enough to have caught the band in Apr 2024 and wrote, “The hottest band in the world right now is Sydney’s Royel Otis (duo Otis Pavlovic and Royel Maddell), out on a world tour to support their debut album PRATTS & PAIN (via OURNESS). The band sold out the Amsterdam Bar & Hall, in St Paul, on Tuesday night, with many young and even old/retired fans coming out on a work night to get a glimpse of the band, thanks to their viral cover of “Murder on the Dancefloor” … which, of course, the band saved near the end of the set to play, to very happy fans on the dancefloor.”

Lead singer and guitarist Otis Pavlovic remembered their first appearance, but gets the city wrong, announcing, “This is our second time in St. Paul.” He was quickly corrected by the keyboardist Tim Ayre, “We are, indeed, in Minneapolis.”

Royel Otis’ latest is a deluxe edition of PRATTS & PAIN.
